I've been hearing a thumping/clunking sound coming from the front end of my car. It happens whether I turn the wheels to the left or right and when I brake. I had a friend turn the wheel while I listened and it's not coming from the suspension. It sounds like it's coming from somewhere around the firewall. Any ideas?

Could be a lot of things. Is it a rythmic thump when you brake/turn, or is a single thump? Guess you could check the steering column/pedal assembly. I'd think its more of a brake/suspension issue. Like swaybar bushings or endlinks.Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons

Worn bushings in the steering column letting the wheel and/or linkage move around maybe? Does your steering wheel seem to flop around more than it should?86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

It just may be the steering stops, put some grease in them and see if it goes away.

yeah i forgot about that front end bang thing. My car with the new style suspension does it, but only at full turn on the wheel.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Steering feels the same as it always has.
I know it's not the steering stops because the noise is present at all turns of the wheel plus I listened and the noise is coming from the firewall area, not the suspension.

Well, I FINALLY found the thump. It turns out that the frame support bar that went from the engine crossmember to the torque box on the frame was not torqued down all the way. It appearred to have been bolted on, but not tightened down, so I torqued them and, what do you know, no more noise.

I bet I can... I've had tons of rattles/clunks I've been trying to get rid of. I found the one rattle in my protege was a nickel that fell under the gascap release and was driving me nuts.Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons

I've gotten some new rattles from my car since doing the door panels and heater core. I think the speakers aren't tight for the dashboard noise and the noise in the front door since it only happens when i have the stereo up. The noise in back, I think I dropped something in the door and its rattling around. Beginning to get annoying, but its to friggin cold to go ripping the panels off to search around for something fallen down in the door.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
