just found a bunch of work...

so i just finished doing a rear brake job on my 2001 MGM LS, this is what I've found: both air bags are cracking very badly and are not going to last much longer, the source of my drive line vibration is my passenger rear axle/wheel bearing. so i am here to ask this: is it worth replacing the bearing, then wait until the air bags give out, and put in a strut master setup? or should i just go get an axle and coils/shocks from a scrapyard and toss them in there (i was thinking of a locking diff anyways). is it that hard to swap an axle completely? will it likely be a bolt on procedure or an i gonna have to get out my welder and saw?

Replace the air springs with air springs. Very simple, not that expensive. If you do go coil, just buy springs for a 2001 Grand Marq. Thats all the Strutmaster ones are but with a bigger price tag.

Good luck finding a traction lock axle for one of these. They're extremely uncommon. Not that hard to swap the whole assembly, but most you fild are probably going to have the same issue. I'd rebuild what you have. Knocking bearings in is not hard, just swap them on both sides and replace the axle shafts. good for another 150k.

do i have to replace axle shafts when i do the bearings or is it just a good idea since they're already out? another thing is that my tranny is shifting hard into 2nd, but fine for the others, any anti-slip or any other additive a good bet? or should i just cross my fingers?

Most of the time if the bearing is wasted, it wrecks the axle too. More frequently a bad bearing is caused by the axle failing. The axle serves as the inner race.

Don't weld it unless you never turn a corner.

I just put a complete rear in a 2002, but I had use of a lift. Which made it an easy swap.
It can be done with floor jacks and jack stands but it will be more work.
I was at the JY a couple of days ago and found 2 CVPI's with 3:55 locking rears!
I seem to remember both cars being 2000 models.

what JY were you at? i may look into them, also, was it only the 3.55 which were locked up that will fit my 2001? i see a few in my area on carpart.com but most only list ratio or prior use, im seeing a lot of ex limo package axles.
