Did you change the oil before starting the motor? If not, you need bearings. Say hello to your replace engine light.

Also, did you use any protection while removing the intake gaskets? rags in the oil galley?

I had a real mechanic look at it today. He's replacing the oil pump and going to check the bearings. I'll keep you posted.

The bearings weren't bad, but one was junk. We put it back together so it'll run, but it's time for a new motor. I'm going to park the Grand Marquis for the winter and start looking into 5.0L motors.

That sucks. At least now you have an excuse to put a real motor in it now. Oh, and it'll run with a wasted bearing for a long time. My 91 was run for at least year with wasted bearings. The 87 ran for a looong time w/o any oil pressure at idle.

OK, I don't mean to sound like a dick, but why on earth would you have it put back together with the bad bearings? It was already apart, and unless the crank was damaged, a new set of bearings would have fixed it up. At that point you'd already paid the labor to have the oil pan removed, and thats half the effort there.

Oh, and since you don't need it, sell me your EGR spacer.

I had a new set of bearings put in. I also know the motor was almost completely torn down, but I put it back together so I could drive it. Anyone keeping score at home will remember the AOD is hurt too. The top speed for my car is about 60 mph now... .

Advance Auto Parts has a 5.0L longblock for $1180. I forgot to get a price on their AOD tranmissions. I'm not too sure if I should just put it back together (reman 5.0L longblock and AOD) or go totally insane and build a killer 5.0L stroker motor and Lentech AOD? I have plenty of time to think about it.

why not try to get a remanufactured explorer motor for a '96 explorer?
I'm assuming it would have the GT40 heads, right?

I have to go back to Advance and get more info on the Explorer motor and the AOD.

Don't replace it with another stock engine if you're gonna have a motor put in. Waste of time and money, HO engines are not really any more expensive to buy in reman form vs stock engines. The HO firing order also promotes longer bearing life. Seen many 150k mile+ Mark VII that run great with no lower end noise. Lots of lopo motors with that mileage have some bearing noise. Explorer motors are also a good choice but the valve springs are crap. You'll wind it past the point where the valves float fairly easy. Other than that problem, they make very good power and torque, well suited for a heavy car.
