Check the Universal joints in your drive shaft. If you go under the car while it's in park on level ground, grab the drive shaft and twist and shake it. If you see any play or feel any play in the universal joints then that is the cause of the problem. Generally this is not how our AOD's die. 99 out of 100 times lose 4th and then 3rd as they die.

A bit of a clunky 3-4 shift is normal but excessive shaking when you let off does sound like U joints or maybe a bad trans mount. If the transmission has leaks, the tranny mount will turn to jello and let it bounce around too much. Stick your finger in the rubber on the trans mount. If its mushy, replace it.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

very first thing, service the transmission and drain the torque converter. then re-fill with fresh fluid. inspect the TV grommet, on the throttle lever, make sure its not broken or missing. also check the TV pressure at idle, should be 0-3 psi.
As previously mentioned, inspect the trans mount and U-joints while you are under there.2003 Town Car Signature - 3.27 RAR, Dual exhaust and J-mod - SOLD 9/2011

It's not absolutely necessary, but it's a good idea. It just moves WOT shift points up slightly in the RPM range.

my tranny was $850 rebuilt, included filter & fluid. my car still makes the clunking-type noise sometimes when i let off of the gas, so it wasn't in the tranny. the tranny guy said he checked the u-joints and tranny mounts when he had it out.. maybe he lied? what else would explain the jerkiness/clunking noise when i left off of the gas. i use injector cleaner since i thought possibly dirty injectors.. no luck..

fix the transmission first, then worry about the HO conversion. HO motor will tear up an ailing AOD In a hurry.2003 Town Car Signature - 3.27 RAR, Dual exhaust and J-mod - SOLD 9/2011
