    HELP Massive emissions problems !!!!!!!

I took my baby to a shop & they did a complete diagnostic test & found out why I can not pass emissions. Heres the list ....Both o2 sensors...The choke pull off..A ground problem to the computer....Air temp sensor for the intake &... EGR needs to be replaced.

All together that would cost me anywhere between $800 to &1,000 !!
I do not have that kind of money! Also my temporary plates expire in two days !!

    What should / Can I do ?

I Really do not want to part ways with her But I am thinking I might need to

Do you have a local wreckers where you could maybe get the EGR and stuff? O2's I would get new.

What is/isn't the choke pulloff doing? I should think you could probably fix that yourself, and certainly the computer ground problem. That's probably just a loose or corroded connection somewheres. And are they sure the EGR needs replaced? I know those sometimes just get carbon built up in 'em and then they don't work right. I ain't no expert on that stuff, though, so someone else will have to give you more (correct) details on that.

      Other than that...MOVE! lol

An '85 GM is an "oddball"? Uhhh...not really...unless there's something really special about it.

I don't know how good this guy is but he does do a lot of work on custom hot rods arround here. He did hook it up to the scope & thats what it told him so....... well I donno

yeah. Spray down the choke linkage with carb cleaner. It will probably fix the problem. EGR system is no big deal, usually just gets clogged up. O2 sensor (one, singular) for an 85 is cheap, like $25 or something. Exactly what did it fail inspection for on the emsissions machine? What codes did he get from checking it? Its possible that you might need that stuff but its not causing your problem. Its quite possibly the catalytic converters are shot.

I think you can tie the choke open with some wire, at least you can on the carb'd cars. That eliminates the choke.

If the choke has been stuck closed, your cats are prolly toast.

Man, I need to get into this car repair business. I could make a fortune in a couple of years.
Let's say you do need these things... egr-$52, oxy sens-$21, air temp-$11. So a total of $84 in parts. Computer ground you can fix yourself, and what is a choke pull off.? And if you need new catalytic converters, they are about $110 each. Hell, the wharehouse for those is in Hammond, I think. Or somewhere close to there. Get yourself a manual, and fix it. It's alot cheaper that way. Regular repair parts are plenty available for these cars. Got my prices offa RockAuto, a local parts shop won't be that much more expensive.

first things first.... CFI cars have only ONE 02 sensor, and its a single wire unit at that, you can get them at the parts store for $30.

second thing, how did they determine these parts are bad? if they just ran the trouble codes, one faulty sensor usually triggers codes for other sensors, do some diagnosis and find the cause of the problem.

Third thing, Mechanical faults (mainly vaccum leaks) will cause huge problems. check the car for vaccum leaks, first thing.
Doing a complete tune up will also help things. new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, PCV valve and T-stat will help reduce emissions and make the car run better.
Changing the engine oil will also reduce HC emissions.
