where is the governor?

I am lost does my 85 gm have a governor and if so where is it andhow do I get rid of it. I am still learning.

I think what you're talking about is the transmission governor. It just determines how fast the engine will run before shifting. In a stock panther AOD it's going to shift around 4000 rpm under WOT conditions. I believe a Mustang governor will allow it to wind out to around 5600. You can install a governor like that in your car, but unless you upgrade the engine it won't really help. The way the engine is cammed and the way the exhaust system is and the puny ports in the heads won't allow it to make much power above the 4k mark anyway.

Mustang governer is 4800 rpm.

The computer doesn't really have a speed limiter. They limited the speed effectively with bad aerodynamics and a really wimpy motor

There isn't an engine governer other than the valve springs that start to float above 5K, and the induction gives out before then.

Yes. A new governor is like $20 and it just involves removing the tailhousing of the transmission IIRC.

If the car is stock, DO not change the governor. It will never shift at full throttle. Some shift kits come with replacement springs for the governor, and the governor itself can be bought at the Ford dealer.

Anyway, it will not make the car and faster or give it any more top speed. It is not needed until the engine is signifigantly modified.

I think it's a dealership part only. But listen to mrltd, you don't really need it at this point if you're a stocker still.

X2, Blaze. In my case, though, I need to do this in reverse. My tranny is out of a Mustang, and the higher shift points are KILLING my fuel mileage. I can live with the 1-2, and 2-3 shifts, but not getting into O/D untill 55-60 m.p.h. is driving me nuts!!!!!!

That sounds like more of a TV cable adjustment issue. The governor does effect this as well, but the difference is when your WOT shift points are. At WOT, normal goverors shift at 4500-4800rpm, where the Mustang ones do 5000-5300 rpm.
