5.0 motor. My spring loaded belt tensioner seems to be frozen. I put my half inch breaker bar in the square hole and cant move it. I tried putting a tire iron on the tension pully and tried prying to no avail. I want to order a an assembly from Rock Auto to replace the pully and the bracket ( with the square hole in it). But looking at the new assembly I cant see where the spring loaded part is.I know I will have to cut the belt off. Can someone tell me where the spring loaded part is.? I only see one bolt to take off the assembly and that is the pivot bolt. Thanks for any reply's..

There's no spring. It's a bolt holding it in place from behind. You have to loosen that bolt and the pivot bolt to move the pulley. The alternator is the tension point on the other belt.

what he said. No spring, just a bolt that you can't see. I think its a 15mm head but don't hold me to that. Its underneath the AC compressor, not hard to feel but pretty near impossible to see.
There is also a pivot bolt that should be loosened a bit. That one is visible from the front side, its one of the bolts that mounts the AC compressor to the bracket. 13mm for that one I believe.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

That is newer style. My tensioner is spring loaded because over the last 30 years I just put the half inch end of breaker bar, pull back against the spring tension and slide the belt off and reverse that to put new one on.. My tensioner is on the right side between the A/C, crank. air pump. If you look on Rock Auto and part number 5942 tensioner and pully , that is what mine looks like. Thanks for the reply.Last edited by DBANDGB; 07-28-2026, 01:20 PM.

You better upload a picture here, because these cars did not have spring tensioners until they went with the 4.6l modular V8.Originally posted by DBANDGB View PostThat is newer style. If it looks like this, there is no spring. Only the pivot bolt and one from the backside to lock it in place. And if it doesn't, it's not right.

Pics needed of your engine. Unless it was converted to a single serpentine belt set up like fox bodies had you have a manual tensioner on your hand that just cooperated with you all these years until now.Originally posted by DBANDGB View PostThat is newer style. +1 pics or it didn't happen. If you have a spring loaded tensioner, you either have an engine swap or at least accessory swap. No panther had a spring tensioner or even provisions for it until the 4.6L modular motors in the 90s.

Yeah. You are just mistaken on what you have. The part number you provided is what you in fact have but like others have mentioned there are no springs involved.~David~

Over the 30 yrs I have had the car I changed the belts a few times.. I would put my half inch breaker bar in the half inch hole, pull back on the bar towards the battery and remove the belt. . Reverse the procedure to put the belt on and the spring would pull the tension pully down on the belt. Thanks for the reply's.
