Oil Light Problem.

    Oil Light Problem.

    now before anyone jumps to conclusions...yes, I do know that when my oil light comes on its due to extremely low oil pressure aka low oil quanitity. with that out of the way, please help....

    every so often my oil light will come on...but then I'll shut it off...go into say my house, come out in a few mins, start up the car and the oil light is off.
    this has been doing this for a short while...

    and yes, I've got plenty of oil in there...I ususally make sure to have a qt in the trunk just in case.
    its got plenty in there..I dunno why its doing this.
    I even make sure to put in a little bit each week...just to be sure its got plenty.

    I'm thinking a bad oil sensor of some sort, but I'm not 100% clear on it...I'm not too smart when it comes to that.

    can anyone shed some light on this for me?

    Does it come on after you've had it running for awhile? Does it ever knock at all?

      Which oil light, the orange "check oil" or the red one? Red one is low pressre, yellow is low level. If the float is bad or the wire has rubbed through and is shorting, it can cause the yellow light to come on.

        its the yellow one...I only have a "check oil" light...I dont see a red one..except for the "engine" light.

        its very sporatic...comes on just after the car is one...comes on after a little drive...comes on after a long drive...I dont get it.

          If it comes on sporadically, then a sender/wiring problem is more likely than an engine problem.

                Wait, so this is the oil level light, right, not the oil pressure light?

                Oil level would have to be on the side of the pan somewhere...oil pressure sender is on the driver's side at the front of the engine down low, right behind the front cover.

                  its the yellow oil light...says Check Oil.

                  I got AMP...FASTEN SEAT BELTS...LOW FUEL...WASHER....ENGINE...CHECK OIL
                  thats all I got.

                  I think after I gots the new motor in I might just make a custom gauge cluster...
                  have a Speedo...Tach...Oil Pressure...Engine Temp...Fuel....Volts...and maybe even Trans Temp.

                      Should have bought a TownCar, then you'd have both lights and know exactly what's going on :p Check the wiring for the oil-level sensor where it goes between the alternator, PS bracket, and engine block and driver-side head - mine had something rub through the insulation and the wire was shorting out against some of said components, causing "check oil" light to come on. Some carb cleaner, electrical tape, and corrugated plastic insulation solved the problem for good.

                        the new motor should be in pretty soon...I'm pretty sure my uncle started on it...or is starting on it this weekend...so, by the end of the month it should be almost ready...I'd say early September...with any luck.

                          make sure the motor has 5 quarts of oil in it......the dipsticks arent very accurate.......some show way over full with 5 quarts

                          1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt

                            Mine reads nearly a quart over full with 5 quarts. When I got the dipstick (got it from the junkyard, lost the original) it already had a line filed into the dipstick for the proper level. I just go by that instead of the factory markings.

                              The oil-level sending unit is in the side of the oilpan, pretty sure it's the driver's side of the rear sump. I used to have the Check Oil Level light come on from time to time when I was on funky grades. Now there's no light and no sender - I like it better that way
