    The torque converter basically. I think some performance modified transmissions remove one of the input shafts to improve strength, but this removes the lockup capability.

    Full lockup means that the torque converter has no internal slippage, which results in better fuel economy. If it doesn't lock, there is some percentage of slipping going on, something like 5% I think but it produces heat and wastes power. THey only have lockup in 3rd and 4th gear.

        On an AOD, there isn't a lock up or non lock up, in the traditional sense. On a regular AOD, the 3/4 input shaft is connected straight to the convertor shell, permanently, with no clutch. Most aftermarket convertors no longer have this feature, either combining the 3/4 shaft mount inside the convertor to the stator, to which the 1/2 outer input shaft now connects to, or the two-shaft system is completely eliminated, via a one-piece shaft from either TCI or LenTech, maybe also another company or two.

        Think of it as a splined hot dog and bun, with the hot dog spinning inside of the bun, the hot dog being 3rd and fourth, the outside 1/2 shaft being the bun.

          The clutch was moved into the transmission. 3rd gear power flow is not 100% through the inner shaft. Only OD puts all power through it. Enough power is flowing through it that it is possible to break the inner shaft when shifting into 3rd. With the Lentech valve body, lockup is eliminated in 3rd gear entirely. There are very few applications which there is an advantage to eliminating lockup. You can also get a controlled lockup Lentech valve body. It is like having a 4 speed auto for drag racing. These trannys can handle higher horsepower applications.
