If you're not changing the cam, I wouldn't go with anything more radical than a factory head, prbably an e7, gt40, or gt40p. The gt40p may require exhaust work, no idea if the factory manfolds will fit with the spark plugs.

In all honesty, if the motor is running fine as is, that $800 would be much better spent on stuff like an exhaust and probably a set of gears in the back. The stock stuff is not performance oriented at all, and upgrading the motor without at least doing exhaust work is pointless.

i would opt for some thumper heads, BBK shorty headers, and BBK "H" or "X" pipe to open up the exhaust. total for what i mentioned will total around $1000 or so.

Just remember, if you stray too much from factory specs, tuning will be an issue.

a plain old HO conversion is cheap, easy, and won't hurt milage too much.

Buy a complete low mileage Explorer motor. You get the GT40 style intake and larger throttle body included in the deal....

yea, if you're going for a mild buildup...say less than 320hp or so....then I would go with something like GT40 heads....you could get some E7s and have Turbo's shop or Thumper port them...but I would only do that if you're looking to drop a couple grand for a 350+hp motor....and if you're going to make a motor like that, I would find a good 351 to buildup honestly.

but if you're doing a mild buildup...follwo thru just as you are with some good gears like 3.55s or 3.73s...sure your hwy mpg goes down...mine did...but I don't regret it at all...city mpg got a little better actually.

Complete Explorer motor, use whatever leftover money you have for drivetrain or suspension work.

If you need tuning, expect to blow another $1000.

+1 on that. Thats a big reason why I always suggest using a stock HO cam. Its boring but they run good and it doesn't require any fussing.
