    So I've heard this before...

My Dad said that in 1965 his best friend walked into a Chevy dealer and bought a 327/365 horse crate engine right off of the parts floor. They took the heads off and shimmed the valves up. My Dad said the only reason they did this was because they thought it was better that way (other local speed shops had suggested it). The engine was put in a '55 Chevy 210, and would rev right through the high 7's and occasionally into the low 8's.

My half brother had a friend with a '70 Nova with a supposed LT1 short block. At times he revved it to 7800 before shifting. When he sold the car, the new owner pulled the engine to freshen it up. It was a 2 bolt main block; no LT1. Survived to 7800+.

Its not totally unbelievable that the shorter stroke 302 would buzz to 10...

The Boss 302 made close to 500hp at 9000 in trans am form; according to: The Mustang Chronicle

Hey Ivan, why not just put the 500 caddy in there with a TH400? It'd be good; but are you looking for mileage here, or just shock factor?

As delivered by the factory, it would not rev to and live at 10,000RPMs. That was an 8000RPM engine.
A current Winston (Sprint) Cup engine will not live at 10,000RPMs and they are a more sophisticated engine than a DZ302.

That 350 will make more power than a 302 will. Would be a lot easier to do an EFI Vortec 350 and a 700R4 trans. The 700R4 is probably tougher than a stock AOD anyway.

If you do want to do it though, there aren't many connections between the EFI harness and the "outside world" so to speak. There is wiring for the fuel pump, one wire thats hot in start/run to kick the relay on, and thats about all she wrote. Oh, there is also wiring to the neutral switch on the side of the trans. It will run without that, but you won't be able to pull codes properly.

Thain, I know the 350 will make more power, it already does, but at what price - 10mpg on a good day right now, plus no OD means I really have to keep it about 55-60mph if I wanna see anything near 15mpg. Besides it'd be pretty damn cool, and it will be pretty consistent as far as driveability goes. Also there's always the 351W, offroad roller cam and some decent heads and it will pull stumps... And 700R4 is weaker than AOD, our trannies die mainly cause of TV bushing or just plain 200-300k mileage, wheres the 700R4 is just a nightmare waiting to happen, and it can happen at any time with no forewarning whatsoever.

Actually I have, but ain't yer car still carbed tho? Those take just as many wires as my truck currently has, which is right about six IIRC.

You would need a van 302 rear-sump pan, and dipstick, and either the 302 EFI truck headers, or you may get Mustang shorties to work. There is plenty of room to work with under the hood, so room won't be an issue.
