check engine light + oil pressure

On a 87 MGM, is the computer and the oil pressure switch hooked to the check engine light?

the red "englne" light is, yes. The computer is not. It has no knowledge of engine oil pressure. When the red light is on, basically you have no oil pressure (like less than 5 psi), or are over 250 degrees. The red light is not related to computer problems at all. If you have a yellow "check engine" light (which is not likely on an 87) that would indicate computer related trouble codes.

Ford oil pumps seldom fail. The pump shaft breaks, or the bearings are shot. OR, the sender is bad. What exactly is happening?

bought some Locus oil yesterday. about 2 miles the light came on,(thought just check engine, not oil) keep driving about 2 more miles engine started to knock (liffter knock sound). checked the oil level, it was ok. so I drove it home with the light still on about 100 yards from home light went off. now when I start the car the light will stay on for about 30 sec. then dim off. I am thinking that the pump is leaking and it can not build up pressure.

so the red light or the orange light was on? Usually when the bearings are dead, you get the death knock on initial startup, and it goes away. Once the motor is warmed up, you see the red light at idle, and it goes away with some throttle. Probably you'll also hear that rattle noise about 1500 rpm or so. The pumps don't leak really, they basically work or they don't. If the bearings are shot, just don't beat on it, and you'll be ok for quite a while. As long as there is oil flow, and the top end isn't chattering away, it'll go for a long time with no oil pressure. Just don't wind the hell out of it or it might toss a rod. No manual shifting.

the car has 170,000 milles on it, and when I pulled the valve covers off, I found about 100 Lbs of sluge. I think the car has never an oil change. I dont get the death knock bad, goes away very quick. right now I am starting a new motor fund. trying to sell things to get a motor, ECM, ect. from a mustang to go HO.

oh, yeah you might have a partially clogged pickup but the bearings are probably tired. Don't run any of that kerosene like engine flush in there. It will knock all that goop free and clog things up real bad.

good to know. I never thought the engine cleaner stuff would be a good idea for any car. but thank you for all the info
