    noisy fuel pump?

when i stick my head under the back of Ruby, i can hear a pretty loud hissing type sound.
seems like its always been there and may be more noticeable since i have an actual exhaust on her now.

is this sound the fuel pump and if so is it normal?
can only hear it if im underneath or have the trunk open and lean in.
    thanks, Bill

I remember mine always had a distinctive hiss even from when I was 8,9 yrs old. I agree and think it's normal.

my fuel pumps have more of a loud hum to them... when car is running and if it is in back of car, more than likely fuel pump. you would hear it in trunk since the pump is mounted on trunk side of the tank.

Yep, you got it. I was gonna say when I have my ear down by the rear tires. I, dunno, I'm a bit odd about my car but the sound has grown on me over the years,

I dunno, mine's more of a high pitched whine, or maybe a "tone" kinda like those tones they play for you when you get a hearing test, only WAY louder! and you DON'T have to be under the car to hear mine either! I just tell everyone my car is singing me a love song!

Wray-Wray the relay is under the hood. It's location varries a bit depending on what year you have.

The fuel pump itself isn't mounted in the trunk, it is in the gas tank which is directly in front of/under the trunk.

My brother's S10 used to have a really loud fuel pump. You could here it over the exhaust quite well. It was more of a high pitched whine. I think alot of GM products have noisy fuel pumps.

the fuel pump relay is under the hood on driver side with a few other relays. it is mounted on the fender usually by the washer reservoir and it is a greenish color. fuel pumps have a tendancy to get louder due to having to produce more pressure and such if the fuel filter or the fuel pump sock are getting clogged.

And pretty expensive from what I've seen. My Grand Am has a rough start issue which I could swear in some way is related to the fuel pump and I dread the day I have to replace it. For the Mercury, I think I change my fuel filter every 3-4 years, it's cheap enough to do.

should actually change the filter about yearly, depending on mileage. I think the service interval is like 12k miles. I drive the hell out of my cars so its at least once a year for me. 40k miles in the 3 1/2 years I've owned the car.

Thanks for the info, my car actually doesn't or at least hasn't gotten so many miles recently with the summer body work, ect. I usually do something each summer that keeps her off the road a month or so, this year perhaps the vinyl (fingers crossed). It has 80,000k now, and I want to say I put about 2-3k on a year. Are you picky with where you buy gas at all? I will only buy from BJ's which is probably Exxon-Mobil. This summer I put $5 gas in my Grand Am to get it home, and the car wouldn't run for 2 weeks until I got the fuel filter changed. Wouldn't you know next time I pass by the station, it's closed they are redoing all their holding tanks .

You're lucky you didn't blow your fuel pump. After the accident my car sat for nearly a year, with about a gallon of gas in the tank. All that gas left a gooey residue around the bottom of the tank. It blew three fuel pumps before I finally figured out what was causing it. Gotta love lifetime warranties.
