    porting E6 heads

now i know E6 heads arent as good as E7 heads but i bought a set of "nustang" heads off ebay and since people are saying E6 heads are mustang heads when they arent, im worried ill get them and not E7 heads.

so, since im on a budget and need to get my motor rebuilt by the end of may ill take what i cant get for now.

im pretty much wondering if i can port E6 heads and get them at least close to E7's? i was gonna try and port-match them as close as i could to the headers and manifold im using if i didnt get E7 heads.

i guess id like to know how much worse E6 heads are then E7's too since im asking questons right now?

    thanks guys

What year Mustang head are they? The 1 and only year that the Mustang used E6 heads was 1986. Didn't they say or show the csting number in the Ebay ad????????

the ports are realy the same only the combustion chambers are different. Ported same deal. If you realy want a set I have a pair of brand new ones might need cleaned up a bit but purchased new from a dealer 150.00 plus shipping.

well, the E6SE head was used on the Mustang in 1986, so they're not really wrong. They're very easy to visually ID though. The E6 has a heart shaped combustion chamber where an E7 has a D shaped chamber. Mostly its that combustion chamber why they suck. Same ports and valves but the chamber design heavily shrouds the valves.

86 5.0 gts used the e6 head.. im currently using them on a ho conversion with no issues or complaints, e6 heads are good for a little more torque at the cost of a few hp compared to e7..

you can also identify them by the type of plugs it takes, if it takes a deep head/thread plug they would be e6's..

ok so really id need to change the combustion chamber's shape to benefit from the E6 heads? the heads came in so i need to get them from thee post office. the guy said theyre from a 89 mustang so i hope hes right, and the only picture i got was of both heads btu it wasnt close enough for me to see casting numbers or chamber shapes

87+ would have e7 heads.. if not he misrepresented his item by telling you it was off a 1989.

Yes you can port e6's! and they will work, but you didnt buy e6 heads you bought e7's and they are the better of the two to port anyways.

As was mentioned, If they are E6 heads, he lied. I would just send them back if that were the case......

If they're original stock springs, it would be a good idea to replace them. They do get tired. New valve seals and cleaning up the valve seats and faces would be a good idea too. The original heads off my motor needed new exhaust valves at 125k, they were pitted enough that they couldn't be cut and still be usable.

The original heads off my motor needed new exhaust valves at 125k, they were pitted enough that they couldn't be cut and still be usable. The set on my car now needed guides and a full set of valves. The engine had apparently been overheated or lube starved, the brass guides were wasted and had partially melted to the valve stems in some places. I think they also had a busted spring or two but I dont remember for sure.
