    Trans govenor

Do I need to change the govenor in the trans if I only plan to keep the car in second gear on the track?

    #2
Mods you can delete this post....this was a dumb question I already knew the answer to....Since the AOD is P R N OD D 1 I cant just put it in 2nd gear therfore I will need to change the govenor out so it will hold second gear longer......

you cna hold 2nd as long as you want... It's the same as a mustang. pull lever to 1 run it up to what ever rpm, put it in D , let it shift into 2 and pull lever to 1.....

So that's how you do that! Is OD just fully automatic, then, you just don't have any Overdrive Lockout option?

I'm planning to try my hand at modifying my own AOD governor .... first I'll wait and find out how I did with the material-removal from a C4 governor weight, then later on I'll start looking more seriously at at the AOD.

yep, no overdrive lockout. Thats actually why I have no plans to do it to my car. I use D a lot more than I'd ever use 2. What would be totally kickass is this coupled with electronic OD lockout. I think someone makes a special valve body for this, but its quite expensive. I know Lentech offers this as an option on some of their VB and trans packages.

I'm sure I used to know this, but at that point, what's the reasoning behind modifying the mechanical AOD instead of just swapping in an AOD-E or E4OD?

for those who don't want the electronics. A stand-alone controller isn't cheap either. Its possible to wire in a stock 4R70W car PCM piggy-back to the engine ECM to control the trans, but you best know what you're doing if you're gonna tap into all that mess. Not really an option for you carb people, no stock ECM to piggy back the sensor inputs.

You could run the AODE/4R70W with a Baumannator TCS - www.becontrols.com - It would cost about $550 complete with harness... Just remember that the electronic transmissions are 7/8" longer than the AOD and may require crossmember/driveshaft mods to work correctly. They do make aftermarket crossmembers for teh Stangs, but us Panthers are on our own.

or if you own a Lincoln, they already use a longer transmission. A 4R70w is actually about 1/2" shorter than the Lincoln AOD, which is not enough to worry about.

Not everyone wants the wiring and the electronics. Personally, I'd love to do this with my car. Programmable shifting FTW. Screw all the fussing and fiddling with an AOD valve body to get it right. Maybe when my AOD dies in another 100k I'll do this.
