    1991 spark knock...

OK, Got a slight problem with my 91... Want to see if anyone can give me a clue as to what is the problem...

When it is under 70 degrees outside... my car spark knocks like a bitch... And gets worse if I idle for a few minutes... Or turn a right hand corner... Then it sounds like it is about to blow up! However, when it is warm outside... it drives perfectly normal...

I have checked the computer for trouble codes... No codes in the computer, no warning lights... and the timing is right on the money... (And has less than 10,000 miles since the timing chain was replaced)

    Any ideas???

Did you get a code 11 when you pulled the codes? Code 11 means everything is okay and if you didn't get it, you either didn't pull the codes correctly or the computer (or wiring to it) is screwed.

    Otherwise, maybe the EGR valve?

Is your EGR clogged? What about your cats (if you have them)?

Like I said, no TROUBLE codes.. Do not know if the code 11 was there.. My mechanic did it with his Snap On code reader... and he said no trouble codes were set. As far as the cats they are ok as far as I know... I will be doing some more checking on this after I get the 84 in the shop for the four barrel conversion.. then when I get the car out, I will have something to drive while I check this out... I have tried putting super unleaded in the car... it still does it, but not as bad... I may replace the egr valve... it probably needs it. The one on the car is probably the original...

Its bullshit, thats what it is. Three of my friends at school are all experiencing the same in there cars (none of which are Panthers; two are carbureted). Its the fucking dog piss the oil companies are selling us.

Be wary of the "octane booster" additives that are out there. Running those additives and the "fuel injector cleaner" additives plugged my cats up, no matter what they say on the back of the bottle about how it's safe for cats. Since this problem cropped up on my car a couple years ago, even though we fixed both the egr and the cats, I've been running premium. Although my dad, who's been driving it lately, says that it's running fine on regular. Costco gas FTW.

Mine has pinged since I replaced the original engine. I've given up trying to understand why, there is no logical reason for it. It doesn't ping any worse now than it ever has though, and I filled up with 10% ethanol stuff last tank.

Well, I will be playing with my car more next week, and maybe I can figure something out (I need to get a tuning kit, etc). I'm not interested in running premium though; I shouldn't have to with a whopping 8.3:1 CR.

True dat. I'm no expert in this area, but a common cause of this is a combustion chamber temperature being too high, right? Could this be happening because a coolant passage to a head is blocked or something?

High combustion temps can lead to this. Not if a blocked cooling passage would cause that, but I suppose its possible. But, I know none of my coolant passages are blocked; I just put this intake on last month.
