    Build up on pistons

Hey guys, I just got done taking off my cylinder heads and there is some pretty significant carbon buildup on the piston tops. Is this due to the oil rings being shot? I'm considering pulling the block out and rebuilding it with new pistons and stuff.
1989 Lincoln Town Car - "Anabelle" - Original block, .030 over with SpeedPro pistons, rods fitted with ARP hardware, FRPP +volume oil pump, GT-40 3bar heads, Crane 1.72 rockers, 89' Fox cam, 93' Cobra lower intake, Explorer upper and 65mm TB, 93' Lightning EGR spacer, K&N intake kit from a 4.0L Ranger, 19lb/hr injectors w/ 87 Mark VII ECM, cat/smog deletes, Big Brake conversion, 3.55 K-Code Trac-Lok/Disc brake rear axle, CVPI LCA's w/1" sway bar in rear, wagon front sway bar, BBK 2.5" off-road H-Pipe, Flowmaster super 40s, HPP wheels, 3G alternator w/LMR.com wiring kit, gear reduction starter conversion, Best 1/4 time: 16.0 @ 85mph.

Could be worn valves and seals, etc... With lots of milage it's fairly common

Hmm, I would have thought that also, but the heads were rebuilt with fresh seals less than 25000 miles ago.

Hard to say now, but it would have been very easy to check with a leakdown test, but that only works if the heads are on the car.

Doh, I want to get the forged pistons, rods and crank out of a 87-93 mustang block. Is the Lincoln block that is in there identical to the mustang block as far as strength goes?

Also, I overheated the car twice 3 years ago when I didnt have a gauge, just the dummy light. And I found a snapped head bolt a few weeks later when I went to do my HO conversion. Then after my HO conversion a big smoke cloud would come out under heavy throttle, and if I was going 80+ on the highway with it floored, smoke was pouring out of the tails. I'm going to go ahead and do the rings and crank bearings while I've come this far. I have an 2-ton engine hoist and an engine stand.

Same block. You may not be able to use used Mustang pistons, its possible the engine will need to be bored out some to make the bores correct again. drop it off at the machine shop and let them tell you what pistons you need. if its stock bore, then stock replacements for a mustang will do the job, or if you're not hard set on forged, the truck engine kits provide a nearly identical piston thats hypereutectic. Not quite as strong but still plenty enough for most needs. The truck engine kits are also cheaper, forged pistons ain't cheap.

Ok, will the rods and crank that are in there stand up to ~300whp? I plan on swapping in a bigger cam, since my pistons will have reliefs in them. 300 is the max I would have, not looking to spend a ton.

is this a good engine to grab and throw some heads on?

                              Good deal.

The cheapest set listed in my FRPP catlog is PN 6200 M50. Thats 180 for a set, and they are listed as replacement rods. $311 for forged 4130 units; PN 6200 D50.
