According to my Haynes shop book there are almost 80 codes and you have to use a voltmeter to access them ..... hmmm never done this type of diagnostic before. I might call up the local Ford dealer tomorrow and see if their mechanics are still familiar with doing this. I do not mind doing the work, but certainly do not want to wreck my computor.

I think I last used a Haynes manual to level out a couch with a broken foot. That was the best use I ever got out of the thing.

you just ground the self test input on the EEC-IV connector in the engine bay, then turn the key to ON but not to run, and count out blinks of your check engine light. check the codes against the list at fordfuelinjection.com - that's as complicated as it gets for these cars.

I still refer to mine from time to time for capacities and similar garbage. Torque specs, too.

Retarded thing about Box Panther Haynes manuals is they were intended to cover all "fullsize" models from '68, which means tons of pages with useless things like blowups of a C6 or a 460, and then when they have diagrams you need for things like dash parts or door panels it shows a '75 model, which looks completely different.

Just a day or so before the light coming on I replaced both serpentine belts and had the alternator rebuilt. THe old belts were worn out and slipping. The new ones are on good and tight.
The check engine light only comes on at idle and goes off when accelerating. I wonder if the engine RPM had dropped at idle because of the tighter belts ... Any ideas ?

EGR valve position sensor. If it just flashes at you. If it's at the same general throttle position every time, I would bet the TPS.

Some codes are more important than others. Anything that would be found out of the ordinary in the day to day driving of the car will put on the light.

Stuff that would only be found through the self test won't put on the light. Since the computer never tests the circuits that aren't normally used. That's why the check engine light won't come on when the Air pump stuff is disconnected, but when a sensor, such as the ECT, TPS, MAP, etc. are unplugged the computer will recognize the fault almost immediately.

They had it before it was federally mandated. haha. The early 4.6 panthers ('92-'95) and the '94 an '95 mustangs had it too. And they were still EEC-IV (pre OBDII)

Alright, I shouldn't say "of any kind", but still painfully limited. I always hate to admit that I have enjoyed owning and working on the late 80's-early 90's Chrysler vehicles I have owned over the years due to their diagnostic aids and abundance of streaming data. I'll never stop hating o2 crosscounts and integrator/block learn, but I'd troubleshoot any crazy GM or Chrysler bug faster than I would on some crappy Tempo or Sable. Don't get me wrong, I love my Ford/Lincoln/Mercury masterpieces, but I don't think that would have been a fun time to be a Ford technician.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, THIS:

                                OK,
Tested the car today at a buddy's garage. He had a Snap-on tester. It was a code 63 .... the TPS ...Throttle Position Sensor. Ordered a new one and will put it on this weekend. Not sure if the code will clear by itself after the repairs. My guess is it will. Has been a learning experience and thanks to everyone here for that !
                                Cheers
