Think it's been mentioned, but any shorty header designed for '86-'93 5.0 Mustangs should be fine unless you do indeed get the "P" heads, in which case the Motorsport headers will be the only ones guaranteed to fit.

IDK on that one. The shorty headers are fine, but the H-pipe that I got from BBK hangs a little low and my mom's car is nowhere near as low as that wagon. You might have to go with custom pipes back to the '94-'96 Impala tails.

Oh BTW, if I haven't mentioned it B4, that wagon is badaz.

portdizzal, have you considered asking Mustang guys for their old stock HO parts (they may give it to you free if they're nice since they have no use for it) and getting lower gears? i don't know if you want a performance build or not but i know that a 302HO with an Explorer cam and lower gears like 3.73's or 4.10's would be a huge difference

i'm gonna ask around for some 305HO parts for when i rebuild my truck motor and i'm gonna get 4.10's

As far as my exhaust goes i cant run a H-pipe at all. my driveshaft has to have enough room to move. the pipes i have now are tucked up next to the frame. i am using small cats and two small flowmasters and the dump right under the car. i dont have room anywhere to run the pipes out the back of the car due to the travel of the rear end and the gas tank being right behind it blocking any path of going over it. I just want to make sure that whatever heads i get i can get shorty headers for that wont be any longer than the factory manifold. as of now the engine is raised 3/4" to clear the oilpan and the downpiep from the cats still touch the ground.

It seems as though i have a full rebuilt 5.0 bored out to 327 with a high rise manifold and aftermarket heads lined up right now. the guy says it is 350hp motor could be more with good tuning. If that deal falls through then i will be searching for an explorer motor.

THANK ALL OF YOU GUYS FOR ANSWERING ALL MY QUESTIONS AND GIVING ME SUCH GOOD INFORMATION.

Wow! Can you tell some of us aren't used to thinking about radically lowered vehicles? At least exhaust clearance should be fine if you build or have built a pair of custom fit pipes going from the '86-'93 Rustang shorty header of your choice back to mufflers with turndowns. Some of the guys on here have custom-bent systems that appear to tuck up under the car quite well.

Funky about raising the engine. Did the oilpan really scrape the ground with the engine in the stock location?

Good luck with the lead on that 327 stroker! I'd be interested to try one of those one day, even though the 3.25" crank is a relatively uncommon mod to a 5.0.

We have been over this in the not so distant past. There ARE early 97 model year vehicles with GT40 heads. It appears that there is an overlap and not a clean cut over as there are still GT40 headed engines after the introduction of the GT40P engines. By January of 1997 calendar year, it appears that the Ps took over.

ALL Explorer 302 motors had a P for the VIN engine code whether or not the had P heads....

Lol, yeah. So, still not a clear cut way to get a standard gt40 on a 97 model year without actually looking at the motor. I highly doubt the junkyard will care or know the difference. So, the safe thing to do if you want a standard gt40 motor is to ask for a 96- right? (or a 93-95 cobra motor)

wasn't aware of the P vin code though.
