    A Few Problems

    Hello team,

I recently (Just before last winter) installed a rebuilt engine into my 89 grand marquis gs with 51k on the clock and I was wondering if anyone has some advice related to a few problems that I have. (The reason for needing to put the rebuilt into it is long and sad)

    1. Flat spot in acceleration. I've read the sticky on the TV cable I'm going to check out my cable adjustment. After a shift, if I'm under a state of light throttle, the acceleration can be minimal or nothing. I"ve found this when cruising on the highway and suddenly find myself only doing 55-60 and need to accelerate. I get virtually no acceleration until I move to higher throttle and the trans downshifts.

    2. Smog Pump. On the smog pump, I have one set of hoses going to exhaust system. I also have one wrapping around the upper back side of the engine and T'ing off. A third nozzle, exiting the air pump, is unconnected. This is the one that I'm wondering about. If I plug the hole with my finger the engine idle and noise changes.

    3. Idle speed: It's a bit high, (not sure how much) and it may be related to the smog pumps not being completely connected. If not, I checked the signal to my IAC valve to be around 11.5 volts. Haynes says ~10.5 is normal. I'm not sure if that difference is the source. I haven't checked the valve itself for cleanliness.

    4. Squeal: I hear a squeal at idle as well as whenever I come off the highway and my foot is off the gas. It sounds alot like a belt or pulley. The tensioner pulley has some play in it. (Rocking it top to bottom) The noise goes away almost completely when I put my foot on the brake and get vacuum assist. (When in park or drive) It also goes away when I put the car into reverse or drive. This might be air pump noise or it may be related to number 5.

    5. Water Pump Bolt: I'm missing the bolt on the left side of the water pump that also has a stud coming out of it that the tensioner shares. I'm using a long bolt with a washers to replaced a bolt (with prodtruding stud) and nut. The fact that the washer thickness doesn't match the OEM bolt head thickness may be causing the belt squeal at idle.

Thanks in advance by the way for any info. I'd post pictures but I'm too cheap to buy a digital camera.

    1) when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? Tune-up? How are your vacuum lines? Have you checked it for codes? THis could be a lot of things. Early shifting among them.

    2) The small one on the top of the pump right? looks like the picture? If so thats normal. What that does is produce additional vacuum for the cruise control. It should pump air out, it creates a venturi effect. Normally it sort of whistles or makes a farting noise.

    3) voltage on the IAC is sort of hard to reference. It adjusts as needed, and its a pulse modulated signal I believe. Never stuck this on an occiliscope to verify it though.

    4) Pump is a possible. Pull the belt off that side and see if the noise goes away. Mine sounded like a spaceship in those olf 50s scifi movies before I removed the smog pump. If you don't live in a state that requires this, you can remove it without any negative consequences.

    5) Possible. I think Napa sells a water pump bolt kit for these.

Mine was doing this same thing, acted like it was in OD all the time, I literally had to floor it to get it to kick down....until I adjusted the TV cable...made a WORLD of difference.

Only thing is, I musta adjusted mine a bit too much, now it won't shift into OD unless I let off the accelerator...unless I am using cruise control, then it'll shift into OD somewhere between 60-65 mph.

Oh so that's supposed to be like that? I plugged up that extra port.

yeah its supposed to be like that with the port open. it won't make vacuum otherwise.
