    tune up time

ive only had this car since DEC. it was an old man car and has 60k on the clock. no running issues at all right now

but i was checking under the hood and noticed the plug wires were from 1989, presumably original to the car and the cap and rotar look to be the same age. the plugs probably are too

so right away all of those things are on "the list"

this is also the first FI car ive ever had. would this be a good time to do the injectors too while im in there? or any of the other sensors that go along with the EFI stuff? it looks like the upper intake needs to come all the way off to get to the injectors anyway

im a big fan of prevenative maintence, espically on a DD

im also going to do all four corners on the brakes sometime this month too and get another oil change in before summer

i put a new waterpump on 2 months ago when the seal started leaking but at this point im even considering just buying a alternator too while im at it. thats 20 years old too. when im stopped i notice my headlights and interior are a slight bit dimmer then when im hitting the gas. warning sign or natural? once again, ive never had a car with as much electrical draw as one of these either

doing the trans fluid is also on the list. i know nada about AOD's so let me know where to go and whats best for that too

idk, maybe im just OCD but the car is in great shape and i want to keep it that way

    no need to do injectors
    replace:
dist cap and rotor, plug wires, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, screen and gromnet
i would use motorcraft spark plugs, their wire sets are decent too

so how do you de-pressurize the fuel system? pull the pump fuse and crank it?

The stock alternators have lousy idle speed output. Probably a new one won't be any better. Honestly with the quality of rebuilds these days I'd rather run an original till it dies than replace it ahead of time. I'd also not replace it with a stocker. The 3g swap is pretty simple, gives you about double the charge capacity, and eliminates the fire issue that the stock alternators have. Idle output is much better too.

Im damn near tempted to use em in my GM products. Never, under ANY circumstances use Bosch plugs. all of em are shit. I usually let people pick their own stuff, but I've myself, and others have rarely had any luck with em.

When I first bought my '88 Grand Marquis I did the same thing as the OP, replaced all of the original ignition components; I installed Bosch spark plugs. When I put it on the road I noticed that is had an occasional misfire. I spent weeks chasing the stupid misfire and finally decided to replaced the Bosch plugs with Autolites. The misfire disappeared and I haven't bought any Bosch plugs since. That said, I do know people who use them with great success. Perhaps their plugs just don't work well with the ignition system on these cars.

One of these days I'm gonna have to try Bosch Super plugs. Its the copper core plug that Bosch makes. They ran fantastic in my VW, but Bosch Platinums ran like crap in that same motor. Never had on of those platinum plugs run worth a crap to be honest, they ping in my S10 and the VW just ran wierdly. My friend pulled a set out of his S10 with 500 miles on them, and installed the old worn out plugs in order to fix a bad running problem caused by the Bosch plugs.

There's no need to replace the injectors....but I would have them professionally cleaned, simply due to how old the car is. Some places can do it on the car....but make sure they are actually going through the fuel rail, and not dumping some crap in the tank. 3M has a fuel-injection cleaning kit that plumbs into the fuel rail, and has its own fuel supply, after you disconnect the fuel pump. Once disconnected, the engine runs on the 'mix' in the 3M can....cleaning the injectors, and also cleaning up the combustion chambers a bit. It works pretty darn good....I just never got around to buying the 3M-specific adapter set....which was around $300 the last time I looked, some years ago.
