Noob Header ?

Hey folks...i got a MGM about 3 weeks ago. And i have been working my ass off to fix as much as i can and clean it up. Traded a 78 Cougar w/ Blown and Cracked 351W for this 85 MGM. Had been sitting under a tree for 8 months after getting ripped on a paint job. Leaves sitting on it, masking tape baking on it in the sun and a small mouse family living in the trunk along with 6 inches of water. the link below shows it from when i got it to the working progress trying to get it back to road worthy. And now it's the exhaust getting on my nerves. I want to run headers and some Delta Flow's 40 Series 1-chamber Mufflers getting dumped in front of the ass. So i can only afford to do this once and the time is kinda important. So can someone tell me EXACTLY wat i need to get, i use mainly Summit for parts. I will have the mufflers basically next weekend. Buddy of mine is going to run everything. Need to know about wat else i need.

Probably the best (easiest) header solution for a stock engine is to obtain a used pair of factory tubular manifolds from an '86-'93 Mustang, along with the stock Mustang H pipe. Should be able to get all of that for cheap to free from a nearby Mustanger, or check eBay, Craigslist, and consider posting a Wanted ad in parts classifieds at Corral.net and other Mustang forums.

What exactly you need after that will be determined by what inlet size is on your mufflers. 2.25" midpipes will work well, and Walker PN 43281 (x2) fits very nicely after a Mustang crossover pipe and puts the mufflers right where you want them. I actually have a pair that I might not be reusing. If you must have 2.5", Maremont 339221 (IIRC) is your ticket.

If you want to reuse your stock "downpipes", it's possible to obtain a ball flange adapter (I have the Walker part number posted somewhere) that allows you to bolt the old pipes up to the new headers (and any aftermarket '86-'93 5.0 Mustang shorty header). Just keep in mind that you may well have an oxygen sensor or two that you'll need to relocate from your old exhaust manifolds to the pipes; the factory Mustang pipes (and aftermarket bolt-in replacements) already have bungs to screw them into if you obtain new sensors with longer pigtails, but you'll need to obtain a bung or two and weld it to your pipes otherwise.

Thanx tons for all the info. My Fiance and I are working on this together (her first anything auto) and we are trying to make it a nice dependable daily since she is 8 weeks pregnant and i only have a truck otherwise to drive. So i will be busy with this place for sure.

For a stock-motored daily driver, I'd forget the Rumblemasters and get some stock '95 Caprice mufflers (2.25" in, 2" out) and stock Vic 2" tailpipes. I have such a muffler/tailpipe set that will probably be going under a car with a slightly hotter than stock engine (maybe 200-210 HP) and have performed OK behind an engine making maybe 250hp (it seems happer with its current 2.5"/2.25" system). Plenty of flow without drilling the sound through the base of your skull constantly.

A good performance exhaust for a panther, that is relatively quiet and all-purpose, is mustang shorties, mustang h-pipe, 2.25" dual mufflers, and 2" dual tailpipes. Keeps that torque and gives a nice sound without being annoying on the highway ;-)

Well the reason i'm running the 1 chamber Flow's is because it was a thing a friend of mine did with his 86 MGM. He passed away due to a drunk driver. So most of the stuff i'm doing will be in a sort of memory of him. So sounds like some Mustang Shorties, H-Pipe w/ O2 Sensor's and then my mufflers. Sounds like a deal to me.

Dumps sound good, but i personally would not run them on a daily driver for safety reasons. You run the risk of exhaust getting trapped under the car and leaking inside, especially in traffic situations, or idling.

i have been told that by a few people. but honestly i usually only deal with sit still traffic once a year at the Grand National Rod Runs in Piegon Forge, TN. So i'm not too worried about it. if it becomes a problem i will extend them out behind the wheel at a slant exit.
