Does anyone know of any vehicles this actually applies to? I want to know how this misconception started.

well since i would be replacing all pieces of the shaft, yoke, shaft, and rear flange i dont think marking it would be necessary, also its not like i am taking the rear pinion off the other car.

Marking it isn't necessary anyway... the driveshaft is independently balanced. Its position no effect on any other part of the drivetrain, nor vice versa.

On the other hand, I did notice that the trans has one odd spline so the yoke only goes one way.

It says to mark it in the book. It seems to indicate the whole line was dynamically balanced, but I know thats not so. I've never had it make any noticeable difference when I've re-installed the driveshaft to tell you the truth.

Trans yoke has no funny splines as far as I'm aware, or at least I've never run into that in the however many driveshafts I've had in and out over the years.

Odd spline? Sounds more like a damaged output shaft ....

Well thats not good at all.... I hope not. I think when i get a chance i am going to drive it my work and pop off the drive shaft again and take a closer look... I know it looked almost like the slip yoke was missing a spline, and i figured it was made that way. I will take a better look tomarrow

Sorry to bring my old thread back from the dead, but i got it fixed somewhat. The u-joints were loose and a shop by my house was able to put i guess larger caps in to compensate for the wear. I watch them actually have to press in the caps so i'm guessing it will be ok.

But now i have a new problem and some questions... After they did the new u-joints they took it for a spin and it was making almost the exact noise when you let off the gas so they pulled my diff cover off and found some carnage, looks like pinion is missing a tooth, found it laying in the bottom of the pumpkin.

Now my questions are how many splines are our axles? I am guessing 28, would a mustang t-lock fit from fordracing? And finally are 4.10 gears too much for our cars? I dont go on the highway much and they would be free lol

                      1. Yep, 28 splines, unless you own a limo.

                      2. Yes, it fits.

                      3. 3.73's for stock engines....but if they're free....go for it.

speedo gears you can get from here:

                          http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...matic&x=27&y=4

Can probably also get one from a Ford dealer. They're not expensive.

With a 4.10, you may not be able to get the speedometer accurate though. It depends on the number of driven teeth in the transmission. The special order high tooth count gears don't hold up well from what I understand.

Traction lock, shop around. Truth be told, in your shoes I'd go new, unless its real cheap. The rebuild kit prices have gone up, so if you spend a bunch on a used one and pay someone to rebuild it, you won't save anything. You can do it yourself, but its still going to come down to how much money you have into it vs buying new. Summit lists brand new traction locks for 200 bucks, and you might find that cheaper somewhere else.

Well i work at a ford dealer so i will talk to my parts dept tomorrow. I can rebuild one if i need to, parts are a bit cheaper for me anyhow. Does anyone know if explorer IRS carriers would fit our cars? I had to warranty a carrier for one and ford hasn't called it back so far its been two months so if it fits i think i can use that in my car. The explorer had the towing package with LSD im not sure what gears but they were pretty mangled. The 4.10s are from a buddy of mine who went with a vortech on his mustang and cant even get the wheels to stop spinning in 3rd gear so he went down to a 3.55

Explorers are 31 spline. Gears would work if they weren't trashed.
