    Engine overhaul in my "Baby" LTD...

    I talked to the original owner of my car after the FHP sold it... Here is what he did to the engine when he rebuilt it... About two months before I bought it from him....

    The skirt on the number 5 piston had broken off... so he pulled the engine, and totally went thru it...

    the engine was---
    1) block decked for trueness,
    2) crank bores were re-machined and bore aligned...
    3) new main caps and bolts
    4) new rods, pistons (forged)
    5) block bored .40 over
    6) rings, bearings, etc....
    7) high volume oil pump
    8) heads reworked... new valves and new valve train installed
    9) two angle valve job.. (is there such a thing? I have heard of 3 angle, but not two)
    10) new double roller timing chain and gear set
    11) new water pump
    12) new engine mounts
    13) Crank turned and polished


    I was suprised to learn the car had a new motor installed in it.. i knew he had "freshened it up".. but not that much!!!

    He is getting all the receipts for my records... he has them filed... so i should get that soon....



    So my next question is, with a stock 302, bored 40 over, what is the new displacement?

    1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt

      Yeah, 1 angle is the stock setup. Highest number of angles I have commonly heard of being done is 5.

        the heads on my lincoln had a 5 angle valve job

          Why don't they just radius the surface? Why do we insist on using several flat surfaces instead of a nice smooth curve?

              I was guessing improved sealing area. Flat to flat provides more surface area vs flat to radius.

                im guessing its something to do with the whole square inside a cirlcle kinda deal, less material there to block the valve....something like that

                  Pretty close, it has to do with making a good seal. However the reason they use the flat on flat is because of thermal expansion. A radiused seat and valve would seal great, and last forever, untill the valve became .001" larger in diameter from heat (the valve seat does not expand at the same rate). The sloped cotact suface will maintain a seal throughout the hot and cold opperations.
