    oil leaks

my 87 vc wag is leaking oil underneath and i cant find where its coming from pan bolts are tight oil drain plugs are tight im lost

if it's rusty, the oil pan itself has been known to rot right through. If it's still a pinhole it might look like just a gasket or drain plug.

Try using some brake cleaner to get all the oil gone, and then letting it sit for a day or two and looking again.

Even though the bolts are tight, it can still leak if the gaskets are old and dried out.

Could be the front or rear main seal also. Best bet is to clean the area good and then watch for new accumulations

I done heard about them there crappy steel oil pans. Excellent advice.

And it sucks x 2 because you have to lift the dang engine to change them!

My oil pan has been rusted through for 3+ years now. Permatex RTV silicone is keeping it all in!

When's the last time the PCV valve and screen have been changed? If the screen is clogged, you will ultimately blow engine seals all over. I lost my intake manifold, valve cover and front main seal from a clogged pcv screen. If you change it, it may leak less if it's a massive leak.

My sympathies to your mechanic for the impending oil pan job Mine had a hole rot right on through it, though the leak was very slow at first it got bigger quick.

Y'know, a lot of times it's the valve cover gaskets leaking way in the back where it's hard to see. Then the leak just runs down the back of the engine. I remember when I had my 81' (351w), what I thought was rear main seal tuned out to be just that.... valvecover gaskets.

rear of the lower intake also dumps oil and it runs down the back of the motor. Degrease it, and see where the oil is coming from. Its hard to determine anything if its all goopy.
