Amps....
Just because it is putting out volts, didn't mean it wasn't putting out enough amps... amps it the amount of electricy current.. with out enough amps, the light comes on... The voltage can be down to nothing.. and the amp light won't come on... Had an alternator go bad on me once... the light came on when the car died due to the lack of voltage... right after my AM/FM radio died.. I thought the station went off the air... all of a sudden, dead silence out of the speakers... I was pulling up to work at the time.. backed into a parking spot.. and the car died... I drained the battery so bad EVERYTHING that has a memory erased.. and i had to buy a new battery too... as we never did get it to take a charge after that....

Changed it. Went in with no reciept, just the store number I got it from and they gave me another no questions asked. It still charges at 14.65 volts tho, so i dunno wtf. This one has an actual Motorcraft regulator on it instead of the no brand that was on the other alt. The amp light is out this time, so we'll see what happens. No flicker in the lights anymore so maybe its OK.

OK WTF. I just went and did a voltage check. 14.70 at idle, 14.64 at idle with the high beams, AC and rear defrost switched on. Unplug the VR and it goes to 12.7 with the stuff off. So the alt is working, if a bit overcharging and the amp light is still on. Sound like a bad voltage regulator to anyone else? Annoyingly, the VR is built in to my alternator so that means I need to change it.

friggin Advance Auto crap
I think the alternator on my car blew last night. Stupid thing is maybe a month old tops and the amp light is on. 2 nights ago I noticed the lights flickering at idle like it always did with the old alternator. Last night I noticed the idle flicker was worse, and it didn;t go away at speed. When I started the car to leave Wawa, the amp light was on. I fiddled with the connections, but it didn;t help. Annoyingly, its raining so I can't really go fooling with it right now. I'm also not sure if I'm even able to change the alternator right now, so all this may be a moot point. Its really going to piss me off if I have to get someone to come over and change the alternator on my damn car for me. :cuss:Tags: None
