    Online Manuals?

So far so good. Drained the fuel, replaced the battery, plugs, and wires. changed the oil and filter 3 times. added fresh fuel. I sprayed a little carb cleaner in the throttle bodie after trying to turn it over and does have spark. so im pretty sure its come down to working trhough the rest of the fuel system.

I didnt see any haynes at the parts store for the 88, i was wondering if they are online, or i could order one.

im sure its not really a big deal. to swap fuel lines, filter and pump.

you gotta sign up on Autozone's website, but then you can get access to the repair manuals. Most of the stuff is on their site too.

You really want the Ford manuals. Haynes sort of sucks for these, and it tries to cover way too many years and options. Almost nothing is different from 87 to 88 though, so if you have an 87 manual, feel free to use it. The cruise control stuff is about the only thing that comes to mind as being different to any significant degree.

well, thats good to know. Im trying to figure out my (fueling) issue atm. seems like there is no pressure at the schrader valve (after prodding it with a nail. when i turn the key i hear a definate actuation in the rear of the car, so i know im at least getting juice back there. IDK if i should hear whirring or anything.

its interesting though... the very first time i tried teh key it fired just breifly. and then again after letting it sit overnight, i just tried the key and it again breifly combusted internally. so there is some fuel somewhere..

maybe its just not getting enough fuel due to a clogged filter. im looking up how to disengage the fittings now.

When you sprayed fluid into the TB and cranked it, did it turn over?

If my car sits overnight I have to prime the key 3 times and then on the 4th prime I follow thru to a full crank and the engine turns over every time. Have you tried priming by turning the key half way before fully cranking. This only happens to me when the car has sat overnight.

I have not yet replaced my fuel filter but have the part and a quick disconnect tool and am going to attempt it soon. Here is a video of a guy demonstrating the quick connect/disconnect feature on an A/C hose.

I think our fuel lines are similar but just smaller in diameter and have a plastic retainer clip which must first be removed carefully. Also I think you are supposed to depressurize the fuel system first by removing fuel fuse and then cranking.

            Good luck.

also - I have the 1988 blue ford manuals and they are very detailed. I have the 'Haynes up to 1987' Vic manual that seems very applicable to my 1988 Vic and its dumbed down, which is good b/c I am new to working on cars

              Well, you're sort of right.

Relieve fuel pressure by holding a rag over the schrader valve and pressing the stem down.

You don't need any special tools to replace the fuel filter, just a flathead screwdriver. Once you relieve fuel system pressure, then you can get under there, undo the clamp on the filter, pry the two little white locktabs on the lines away, and remove them. Some gas will drip out, so if you're anal, have a mason jar or something not plastic ready to catch it.

On a scale of one to ten, where one is adding air to a tire and ten is an engine rebuild, this job is about a 2.

Waggin - thanks for the info. I changed the fuel filter this weekend and yea, once the white retainer clips were pulled off the fuel lines, the connections just slipped off the old fuel filter, no quick disconnect fittings anywhere.

My car had gas in the fuel lines (the line from pump to filter and the line from filter to engine) but no pressure at the schrader when I depressed the schrader. I guess thats why I have to prime 3x before starting in the morning.

may want to replace your fuel pressure regulator then.

That means your fuel pump is dying.
