But to clarify, the pedal dosen't fall in on it's own, it just becomes very loose, to the point where just barley pushing the accelerator will cause it to hit the floor. Ussually the it takes a bit of energy to hit the gas, but not when this happens. But it always manages to come right back up.
Almost sounds like the accelerator cable... You might want to check your accelerator cable and spray some carb cleaner on your throttle linkage. Check your tv bushing and tv rod movement while your at it too...

You could get an assistant to push the gas from inside and watch the movement under the hood too(with the car off)

If you don't feel comfortable with the Cruise control, just unplug the servo under the hood. Just make sure that your wires are ok, and I wouldn't worry about the cruise coming on.

yeah I'd follow the two suggestions above and see what happens. Lube the heck out of the throttle cable and linkages and check for binding/hanging up, and if you still experience the problem disconnect the cruise control.

I'd suggest a video, but it sounds like it's too intermittent for that.
