5.0 Timing Chain-What to look out for?

the balancer is not just a chunk of iron. There is a rubber ring between the inner and outer portion of the balancer. If that cracks, the outer portion will shift or slip off, causing horrible vibrations in the motor. I know a guy who had a crankshaft snap in a 302 when the balancer came apart. Look at it very closely. If the rubber ring is pushing out or cracking, it probably should be replaced.
For the pump, just get a good quality one. I'd suggest a new one rather than a reman if at all possible.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Use an iron water pump, like mentioned above. It has 2 extra bolts, so get those too, if you don't already have an iron pump. Paint the pump before you install it.
And +1 on Thain's comments above. The rubber ring in your balance is likely 28 years old, and dry rotted/ cracked. A new balancer is not that expensive. I've seen them as cheap as $60, but they may be cheaper. When you remove and then re-install it, you could compromise the rotted rubber without knowing it.
If it comes apart, it could spell the demise of your engine.

<$40 at Rock for the balancer. They also have something called a 'harmonic balancer repair sleeve', I have no idea what it is.

Goddamn, there's so much they neglect to tell us about in this engine rebuild class; there was not one whisper about replacing the harmonic balancer!
Hey, do you have a part number for the iron pump, or, a model/year/engine of car that came with the iron pump stock and will pull it up at rockauto, autozone, etc.?
I've had trouble finding it; look up 1990 full size mercury and just aluminum pumps come up.

The balancer repair sleeve is a press-fit sleeve that goes on the snout of the balancer to give a good seal surface when the balancer is screwed up. It needs a special oversize seal to make it work. Its usually a better idea to just replace the balancer vs patching it up with one of those if the thing is actually damaged on the seal surface.
If you need an iron pump, use a pre-88 application. in 89 they became aluminum-only.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
