    largest muffler possible?

    Hi!

Doing the dual exhaust swap... I won't really see for myself how it all fits together until I've got my parts in hand and the car on a lift.

Probably the larger the muffler, the quieter it can be. I'm looking at small truck options that are 4x9"x20" long (case-- 26" including pipes).

If that ends up pushing all the piping back, I can always trim the s10 midpipes I ordered.
But I don't know how much space there is; are 20" long mufflers going to bump into the fuel tank or some other obstruction?

If so, I think 13, 14" (x4x9 oval) mufflers are the next standard size down, and I can always go with them.

for reference, the mufflers in the picture HPP posted is 18 inch total length.

Honestly, just buy stock replacement mufflers if you're THAT big on quietness. You aren't going to get them that much quieter, because a stock engine sounds is like 1% exhaust noise. Most of what you hear is underhood noise.

yeah, stock mufflers are about as silent as it gets. They don't breathe worth a damn though, which is why they are so quiet. I drove Scott's Grand Marquis home 2 days ago, and its scarily quiet even with a hole in one of the mufflers.

Most turbo mufflers aren't very loud, and if you have catalytic converters, they do not create obnoxious levels of sound.

True the stocker just sounds like a rush of air lol. Not even really an engine tone.

Must be something wrong with my mufflers then, cause I can hear an engine note... Granted it's quiet, but it's there.

              ok, that's reassuring.
I've had visions in my head of my largely stock wagon sounding like one of those 17 year olds with cherry bomb "mufflers" and 4" chrome tips

Cherry bomb glasspacks. I have a single exhaust system dumping out on just a little behind the rear end with a turndown chrome tip to keep the exhaust HEAT from the gas tank. It is fairly quiet and only wakes up a little when I lightly go at it. If I baby it like grandma or even MOMS you cannot hear it. If I punch it down, it draws attention. Personally I like to hear my cars. That way I can hear if they are running right.
