the water pump has a leak in it... it will leak into that weep hole from the area between the timing cover and the back plate of the water pump. The gasket has a break in it somewhere in there and needs attention. (looks like my 88 has that issue again... grrrr)

Funny, I've never noticed that hole on any of my timing covers. Now I'll have to go check all ... four, I think? ... that are in my possession and see. No idea why there should be one at the top ... there's a weep hole at the bottom of the water-pump-mating area to deal with any leakage through the back of the pump ....2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

At 7000 rpm, rtv comes loose. I don't use rtv on mine. Its made to seal oil, not water.1989 Grand Marquis LS

I always use the permatex RTV. I may just need a gasket... when I get around to pulling it off I'll find out.

Is that a weep hole or the usually unused bolt hole...If it's leaking there the waterpump gaskets or backing plate has failed. The weird part about that is the drain on the bottom of the timing cover should let the coolant go down. Usually if it's pooling there it's either the manifold gaskets or the timing cover gasket to the block.Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons

it's definitely a weep hole (no threads and smaller than the bolt hole). The extra bolt is on the other side between the bypass and heater hoses.

the other way to tell is that there's no extra material half mooned out from the plate that the weep hole is in like on all the other bolt holes.
