Why the Differences in Box Body Tail Pipes?

I was doing some research into box body exhaust parts and noticed something that seemed a bit strange. The part numbers for tail pipes are the same for the 80-88 and 90-91 models, but they're different for the '89 model.

Is there something different about the '89 model that requires unique tailpipes?

    realistically... no.

OK. So, are they interchangeable without any issues?

Just out of curiosity -- what is different about the '89 pipes?

For example, is it the location of the bends that's different, or is it the location of the hangers, or the length or what?

the only difference is the rear hanger configuration. 89 was a cross over year, so some got the 88 style hanger and some got the 90-91 style hanger.

my blue box was built 8/89, so it had the 90-91 style hanger. I ran into this problem when I tried to convert the 89 car to dual exhaust using parts off my wrecked 88 car.

Oh, OK. What are the two types of tailpipe hangers? On my '89 there is a small flat bar type thing welded to the top of each tailpipe right before the end of the tailpipe, and there is a flat piece of rubber-like material fastened to the flat bar, and fastened to the top of the rubber-like piece, there's another flat bar type thing that's attached to a bracket that's fastened to the frame rail.

If I were to somehow get ahold of some tailpipes that had the other type of hangers would it be much of a job to adapt them?

Also, I noticed in your signature that you once had a Lincoln with a "J-mod." I've heard of that, but don't know what it is. What is it?

what you describe is the old style hanger. there is no easy way to adapt the 2 different hanger type, that I am aware of, but I am sure if you are handy with a welder, there is a way to make it work.

J-mod only works on later AODE and 4R70W transmissions, it does not apply to the AOD transmission.
Basically you drill some larger holes in the separator plate for firmer shifts.
