The ECM almost never goes bad. If someone tells you the computer is bad, most of the time they have no idea what they're talking about. With a CFI car, most of your problems will be tuneup parts, vacuum lines, and a bad timing chain. If the ECM is bad, you'll ether get codes that make no sense, or no codes at all. The last bad ECM I had, the car wouldn't even start. That was a later model though. The only bad EEC4 on a box I can think of had a constant code for some sensor that just didn't make sense. I believe it ran OK though.
If the timing chain is original, replace it. They get sloppy and the motor runs like crap. Also make sure the ignition timing is properly set. You must unhook the SPOUT connector to get it right. Check it for codes too. There is no check engine light, so don't look for that to be on if there is a problem.
