    Got a weird issue

I have another weird issue with this 89 Grand Marquis that sat for awhile before i bought it..
Sometimes when i'm accelerating under load it starts to stumble but doesn't throw on a engine light.. letting off when it happens stops the stumble but then give it gas and accelerating again doesn't recreate the stumbling feeling.. maybe transmission? kinda feels like the car is missing.. i don't remember it ever doing that before i replaced the ignition module.. could this be from me playing with the timing at all? just a shot... this site seems to have really experienced guys here so any suggestions are appreciated!!

Timing should create repeatable issues, but just FYI, these cars like the timing to be between 10 and 14 degrees BTC most of the time. You did put the thermal grease on the back of the module and I'd put dielectric grease on the wire harness for good measure. Check the trans fluid to see if it's at a good level and also, if you still have the plastic transmission cable bishing on the throttle body, get the brass bushing and clip before that falls off and the trans nukes itself.

another thing to check is that all the spark wires are seated well. They tend to lift off sometimes after initial install. The ignition module wire harness will sometimes do this too if the clip isn't tight to the body of the module. I had to zip tie that on my 88 for a while to get it to stay put.

to replace the plastic one is it just a simple swap or more complex then that? any adjustments needed etc?
(sorry don't mean to double post i just can't edit anything after 30 min)

          simple swap.
to remove the plastic one... just pull down to release the cable from the lever and then remove the plastic POS.

When was the fuel filter last replaced? I had a similar problem with a bad fuel filter. I replaced it and the stumbling under a load went away.

i actually replaced it when i had to replace a faulty fuel injector about a month or so ago..
it's actually hard to explain.. i'll accelerate and shift fine going around 40-50 mph area.. brake a little bit then try and accelerate off that and i'll get a huge stumble with loss of power then ill let off the gas and it'll instantly stop then i'll slowly accelerate from there fine with no issues.. it seems to be a come and go issue.. no engine light of course! plus on top of that i'm leaking oil again with smoke rising from under the engine i just had the valve covers done lol.. also forgot to mention on a cold start up the engine surges pretty bad but goes away after about 20 seconds.. anyways i'm happy to be apart of this site because you guys actually really know these cars.. i'm new in the marquis world and love my old 89 so much and just want this thing to be close to perfect.. still a work in process

                  Mine did that last week.

It sounds like the throttle bushing. The Ford dealer had the replacement for $20.00. I would like to know
Does this control the downshift to go into a lower gear when passing? It would downshift fine when slowing down, but when you stepped on it it was flat with no acceleration with no downshift. Is there an adjustment that needs to be done to the cable? With a feeler gauge?
                  Just wondering.

                  Thank you,
                  Mike

Unless you are talking about a REAL older car, there is no adjustment. As "Sly" stated above, just remove the plastic one, install the brass one (correctly we hope) and pray for the best!! Bobby

A while ago my car was stumbling a bit and felt like it had no power. It was also burning oil from somewhere around the valve covers. Turns out that it was blowby (oil in the air intake) that was leaking onto the valve covers and burning off. I removed the upper intake and cleaned all the little passages out really good and replaced the PCV screen and grommet. No more burning oil and the engine seemed to breathe a lot easier afterwards.
