Or, can the ECM be reprogrammed?

The ECM doesn't know if the converters are there. The sensors are upstream of the cat converters, so the ECM knows nothing about it. No programming is needed to change that configuration around. It won't run rich or lean with the converters missing, it will just smell bad because the converters aren't cleaning up the emissions. Backpressure also has nothing to do with it. Thats something you want as little of as practical. The stock exhaust is overly restrictive anyway, no need to make it even worse.

replace the mufflers if the junk from the cats ended up in them........i think the only choice you are going to have is to replace the cats.....unless you can find an exhaust shop that will bend up new pipe without the cats (this violates federal law) so chances of finding a muffler shop that will eliminate cats is slim to none......i worked at a meineke shop for a few years, we would not do it.

if the mufflers have converter crumbs in them, it won't flow properly. The exhaust needs to flow.
