    Hissing question

I've had my wagon for 2 months now and have had more than a few people tell me that I have a tire leaking because they hear a hissing from the back of the car when it's off.
I noticed the noise when I first got the car, after you shut it off it hisses for a while.
I looked in the manual and it says that the car would make a noise like that and when refueling, wait for the noise to stop before opening the gas cap.

I need to know if this is "normal" and how long it should last after the car is shut off?

I searched and the only thing I found that sounded similar was the fuel pump but that was with the car running.

Sounds like its got air bags in the rear instead of coil springs. My Mark did that to self level. I thought I heard of some HPPs and some wagons coming with rear air springs. I would love to have air ride on the Merc.

I was not aware that any 88 CV (sedan or wagon) got air bagged. I'm getting old though........the ole memory ain't what it use to be.

If my memory banks are corrupted, and the car really has "air ride" then the snake under the car is probably associated with that system. If I'm right, I'd start by looking at the fuel tank vent and EVAP system. I assume that EFI/CFI models have a tank vent and EVAP system similar to the carb'd version. I'd also check to condition of the seal on the gas cap.

I thought tow package wagons got load leveling springs.

I just looked back up to see what year the car was and look! it says he has a tow package.

Went downstairs and found my salesman's guide. There were two suspension offerings for wagons.
            1) HD Handling Package: Consists of HD Battery, Trailer Towing Suspension, Aux Trans Cooler, TT wiring harness, ps oil cooler, HD flasher, 3.55 Traction Lok axle, HD U-joints, HD radiator, Dual Exhaust, and Conventional Spare tire.

            2) Automatic Load Leveling Suspension (in other words Four Bar Link with air bagged coils)

So two optional packages, one with and one without bags. Should have looked it up before commenting and showing my age !

They aren't really air bags, its an air shock. They die, but you can take any aftermarket air shock to replace them if you buy the $10 line adapter to connect the new ones to the factory plumbing. Very simple, and the system works pretty well. If thats the problem, there would also be a buzzing noise under the hood from the compressor constantly running. At this point the compressor probably would have died though. They will not hold up to constant running forever.

Sounds like a bigass vacuum leak to me. Try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

Slowly open the gas cap, that will tell you right away if its fuel system related. If you are worried about spewing gas, toss a rag over the cap before opening it.
