    Stuck In Snow

Well, I got my car stuck in snow.

    It refused to free itself.

Two passers-by happened to assist me, after which the car was freed.

Now, I wanted to know what I can do to my car to assist my odds of escaping a snowbank that refuses to release me. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

Snow tires are a must. Not LT truck tires but, snow tires! Sand bags are good because, they add weight and you can rip open a bag if you need traction. Sounds like a trac-loc is in your future.

The car weighs 4000 lbs empty. I don't need sandbags, do I?

          And what is a trac-lock?

You want at least 100 lbs over the rear axle/in the trunk to help it bite in the snow & not spin/dig deeper. Otherwise, most of the weight is in the nose of the car. Has anyone seen weight distribution numbers for our cars?

Trac-loc is also known as posi. Is ere the diff carrier s a clutch pack so both wheels spin when needed. Chance are that you have an open carrier, which only let one wheel transmit power, instead of both

mostly. open diffs still transmit power to both wheels, except when the traction isnt the same for both tires.

it's easy to get stuck when one wheel is on ice or deep snow and the other one isn't. most of the time it comes down to tires/fate as the reason you got stuck.

                    Don't drive into a snowbank. =-)
Add a shovel to the trunk. Square style. The few times I've managed to get myself mired, you dig an escape path for your tires, dig out anything major if it is blocking you. And off ya go.

                    Alex.

Look, I swear I heard the engine giggle right before the stupid car drove STRAIGHT AT the snowbank. It was over before I could move my foot to the brake pedal.

Also, the oil pan got buried in the snow. Is there a chance I have an oil leak now?

You are right, in general. I meant what I wrote to be directed at his situation lol.

Yeah, you can go with a little more weight so if/when you use some sand/kitty litter, you still have the minimum 100 lbs back there.
