Modified emission system - any infos?

    Dear Panthers,

my 1986er CP has this sticker on the fan shrud:

I know something about the original configurations (shop manuals ect) but i have no idea, what this means...
has anybody a idea, what this sticker means or which modifications where made? i compared the emission system with pictures from our cars and my older one, iīve seen no differences in the hardware...

    thanks a lot

that's a good question. I would look at what's there and where stuff goes and see if it's different from that vacuum diagram or other pictures of similar vehicles on this forum. Smog pump, diverter valve, crossover pipe, pipe to cats, diverter valve between those pipes... if all that is there, then it was probably just a repair with a later motorcraft part number.

it looks like any other cars here the vacuum routings are the same as the sticker says.

the exthaust system looks very new, exept the both converters after the air inlet pipe, they are very rotted. the two right behind the headers looks newer. perhaps the first one where replaced? (but the car runs very smelly and the drivers side converter is shot i think, it rattles sometimes) i ordered two new converters from rock-auto, theyīre necessary to pass the emission tests here (and save a lot of tax-money )

Do they allow you to install newer 3-way converters so you only have to run 2 cats instead of 4? I would assume the stock cats are 2-way which is why there's 4, unless the first 2 are basically heaters to make the last 2 more efficient. That's how diesel trucks are nowdays, the cat reduces emissions and heats up the exhaust so that way the diesel filter will stay hot to better filter.

Yes, 3-way converters are recommended to get some tax-benefit. Otherwise we have to pay about 1500 $ per year emission-tax. if the car has a 3-way converter youīre in a better emission-class, so the tax is "only" about 400 $ per year. It depends on wich "euro" class the car get in. itīs a joke, a 3-way converter is a 3-way converter, but the emission classification depends on the year of the car. a 1986 car only gets "euro1" which says you have to pay 20$ per 100 ccm of displacement. "Euro2" is about 10$, "Euro3" just 7$ and so on. My E280 Mercedes got "euro4" and i have to pay 150$ per year, BUT: it has the same catalytic-system like the box: 2 converters right after the headers and another two a fex inces later. EGR and secundary air. Itīs the same... but the Benz is "euro4" because itīs "a modern engine and exthaust system from 2002" Thatīs why i donīt agree with all the "european union" BS here...
With the new converters (wich are standard 3 wayīs for a 2010 Mustang) i get "euro3" and save a lot of money. in 2016 my Merc is a "Historic Vehicle" and the taxes fall down to 200$ per year.

The taxes sound very high, and yes, they are but everything here in Germany is three times expensive than in the states...
