what is the best way to clean upper intake off of the car

    Hi,
When I swapped the throttle body last week, I looked inside and noticed the upper intake was dirty and caked up kind heavy. This was probably due to a non attached PCV valve for a long while. I am going to replace the fuel injectors this weekend and replace any vacuum hoses that need it.

What would be the best way to clean the upper intake while it is off of the car?

While it is off, what is the best way to clean the lower intake with it still on the motor?
    It is 1991 Grand Marquis.

    I thank you,
    Mike

For the upper intake, I would degrease the hell out of it and hit the ports with a pressure washer - taking care to avoid the edges of the coated surfaces. Then dry thoroughly with a blowgun before reinstalling. Obviously, removing all of the rubber hoses is advisable in this case.

The lower intake is tricky to clean effectively without removing it. You don't really want to release gunk/debris down into the intake ports on the heads. You might try cleaning with a rag/small brush while constantly running a shop vac very close to the spot you are cleaning.

      This shit.

Seal one end off and fill it up with this stuff, come back a few days later, empty it into a bucket (you can reuse it), then hose out the intake. It will be brand new inside. If it's really bad light scrubbing may be needed.

Has the lower intake gaskets been done recently? If not there probably due anyways, so you may as well pull the lower off and clean it too.

+1 That's what I did with the intake for my 4.0L. I Purple Power'd inside and out; and then hit it with a wire brush. Finished it with a power spray session and painted it. The inside had a thick oily film though, no chunks.
