Fall oil change plan 91 Colony Park

Thinking of trying something different with the Prairie Schooner this winter. Last winter was colder than blue blazes and people who have taken a gander at the Old Farmer's Almanac are telling me to brace for a worse one this year. So I am thinking of trying Castrol High Mileage semi-synth. I was thinking 5-30 but am wondering if I am asking for trouble going that light even with the expected -20F or so. Sooo...

    1. What do you think of the Castrol High Mileage and...
    2. 5-30 OK or should I stick to 10-30?

I plan on doing the oil change the first week of October.

    my take on 5w30.

I like it for quick easy starts. This is probably much better for reducing damage on startup. I seem to burn a bit more oil, but that is not a big negative.

So go with the 5-30 no real down side but a good positive benefit.

Use Mobil 1 extended performance oil. 12 months or 15K miles whichever comes first. About $28 for a 5 quart jug at wallmart. Must use a premium long service filter like fram gold (xtraguard?) or the extended use Mobil 1 model.

I ran some 5W-30 in the box a few months ago when I drove it to STAP. 569 miles total. I noticed it held 5 less pounds of oil pressure at highway speeds, and it used maybe half a quart. As opposed to never using any with 10W-30.

For super cold weather, IMHO, I would think you're ok.

Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

The only real difference is how they flow at cold temps. Should be OK unless the motor is super loose.

+1 cold weather use in boxes... meaning below freezing.

Just run full synthetic 5w30 for the winter. If I notice the difference at a mere -20ºC, You will definately notice the difference where you are.

I'd rather use conventional 10w30' and for easier cold weather start a block heater on a timer.

Do what you like, but I like the fact my engine spins over easily when the cold has a firm grasp on the region.
