    Exhaust dampers

I finished my new dual exhaust on the Merc, the old one was not the original setup, it was more like a "oh, we´ve got this pipes here, put them under the car" style.
Now its all original but the tailpipes, these are not wagon specific.

But the problem is, I've got a drone (more a mechanical drone, not the exhaust sound drone) at certain speeds. my old wagon has the same setup with these "exhaust dampers" near the converters, the Merc has none of them.
So my thoughts are, the drone will went away when i put on these dampers, but… nobody has them (or the part numbers)

just my simple question: du you know, where i can get these dampers?

    thanks a lot

Sounds like a probable junk yard item. Haven't seen if anyone makes them aftermarket.

Don't expect there are a lot of junkyards in Germany with suitable donor vehicles.

Not sure where you can get them either. I'd like to try the same thing, and for the same reasons. Next step might be getting into more involved modifications, but a simple bolt-on answer would be awful nice.

hAVE HAD DAMPERS ON MY VEHICLES AND removed them never noticed a difference and was trained to detect NVH noise and design parts to reduce NVH.

Is the exhaust IDENTICAL to your wagon? If anything is different, especially larger diameter pipes, expect to hear some sort of drone.

You might be very surprised what can be found there or in Eastern Europe/Russia. Bobby has contacts there but unfortunately I can not ask for the info!

When you say damper, do you mean a flex pipe to reduce vibration? The rubber hanger mounts to reduce vibration, or something else? I've also seen metal weights attached to hangers to further reduce vibration, but I'd rather use flex pipe and rubber hanger mounts, I wouldn't be comfortable with the added weight, feel like it might break the hangers if they're rubber.

The dampers are the metal cylinders hanging from the pipe where the cats meet the y/h pipe.

I remove them on all my cars and have never noticed a difference.

I'll have to look again but I don't remember my car having those.

+1 remove and toss. Not needed and weight savings.

I'm going to add that to my long car maintenance to-do list. They seemed like heavy buggers when I replaced the flange gaskets.

Make your own dampers - get some steel pipe, cap one end off, fill with sand, cap the other end off. Attach to exhaust in any manner you like.

Before you do that, how about you pull the dampers off the one car and put them on the one that is being a problem child, it's pretty much guaranteed the donor car won't miss them and you're not out of any money sans what you pay for the new bolts and nuts and washers.

most likely have them on my wagon and on Casper. the wagon might be the first to need some exhaust work possibly whenever the tranny has to be replaced.

Thanks for the replies so far.

The exhaust on the merc was always a little "vibrating" with the old y-pipe thing under the car, it was a little less vibrating than now.

A junkyard here is not an option, in Germany there are only 5! registered Boxes on the road, the last one which was scrapped, was my old LTD Wagon after it was t-boned, so no way here ;( (you can get these numbers from the central registration database in Flensburg)

The only things i found on the net are for the aeros, which are asymmetrical for left and right.
The idea with the self made sand-dampers is good, i never think about that ^^

the ones for the boxes are asymmetrical too. One is definitely heavier than the other. No clue what the actual weight is.
