    Lower Intake Leak

    Out of curiosity; what causes the intake on the lopo (and HO?) to leak? I was hoisting the lopo from the CV onto the Ranger for scrap and realized that the gob of what I thought was grease, was actually grease covering a copious amount of Permatex. I guess my new mechanic (buddy :-/ ) Permatexed the lower intake to keep the oil leak contained. I guess it worked as it didn't really start leaking until the past 2 years. So is the intake twisting and deforming that causes the leaks; or is it the gasket failing? Or both?

    Crummy cork gaskets about 20 years past their life span is what causes oil leaks from under the intake.
    1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

      Yep, that basically. The modern replacement gaskets are a silicone rubber instead of the flat cork bit, and it works a lot better. The cork is at the front and rear edge, sealing from the block up to the bottom of the intake.

        Okay; it's the same cork material that you can (but you shouldn't) get for valve cover gaskets; the material that my Dad cursed when I unknowingly bought it for the Delta 88 those many decades ago. Well, at least I know now; should I come across it at some point. I know a couple people with box MGMs; so this may be a possible repair if they should choose to do so.

          yep, pretty much. The better lower intake gasket sets have a molded rubber thing that sits over the end wall of the block instead of the cork and it works very well. Have to pull the lower intake to fix it though.

            Would have done that anyway to replace the lower intake. That PCV screen was jammed in there so tight that I couldn't get it out by any means. But the solution I chose is better (mom is happier anyways).
