Weird shifts 87 crown Vic 5.0

1987 crown Vic 5.0 lx. Just got it on the road 116k on it. Shifts at high rpms between like 25-35 mph. Also does this in every gear. But different speeds. And it won't upshift when your just cruising. Any one know what this could be? Won't shift unless you really get into it

Sounds like the TV cable is disconnected at the transmission side or is sticky. Defaults to full TV pressure when the trans side of the cable comes loose. Take a ponder underneath to see what you can find. Should seee the shifter linkage then the TV lever on the inside of that.

Otherwise, make sure the TV cable and linkage is moving freely.

Could also be that the TV cable is binding or seized and making the trans thing you're at or near wide open throttle.

Where does that tv cable to go on the engine. The throttle. I thought the other cable on the throttle thing was for cruise control

The tv cable is stuck on full on the throttle side.

Cable is probably bad, or maybe the ball end at the trans is rusted and sticking. Not too hard to figure out. Unhook it at the trans and see if the lever on the transmission moves normally. It should spring return but move fairly easily. If that works, the cable itself is seized internally. They're not hard to replace, should be one screw holding it into the bracket down at the trans end, and the upper end is either a 1/4 turn and pull, or maybe its a screw to hold it. Can't recall exactly but its not hard.

It's not broken it's rusted and sticking.. I put a bunch of wd40 on it and kinda loosened it up but I'm gonna put it up on the lift and find somewhere to put a spring on it.. I don't feel like dumping 70+ for a cable rn

Do you feel like dumping $1000 or so for a transmission? If not, spring for the cable.

I know...that's why I'm putting a spring on it so it has tension.. should work the same way

Not really, if that cable breaks the spring will force it to zero pressure. Thats even worse than being stuck at full pressure. The TV cable must operate correctly or the trans isn't going to work right.
