    TPS Sensor. Idle. Thermostat.

Alright so I had raised my idle this mornign to see if that would help at all. I was idoling real low. Sometimes the car would warm up and idol at around 500. The car surges like most 5.0s I beleive that's from the thermostat? Could that be why the idol changed that much when it warms up?

So with the idol high it didn't help anything. Later I adjusted the TPS. Took it for a ride. No more choking and almost stalling from an idol launch. I lowered the idol. I drove aroudn doing what I needed to do. At first it was fine.. than on my way home.. noticed it started choking again. I raised the idol again and it went away. I'll have to see if the car sputters at all tomorrow morning or anytime in the future.

Is it just because I didn't have everythign set right? Is it right now.... Adjusted TPS and higher Idol.. or will again tomorrow it fuck up once again...

could be the coolant temp sensor. That f's up alot of the stuff like MPG and idle. Also pretty common failure.

And did you reset the ECM after you adjusted the TPS?

The TPS could just be shot too...

      Hmm. ECM, lol... no.

Um...I don't know.. the TPS might be shot.. but as of right now with the idol set where it is.. and the TPS set.. it seems fine. I'll see how it is tomorrow morning and threw out the day.

        IDLE.

The TPS should be set using a voltmeter. Probe the green wire and set it to 1.0v or as close to it as you can get. You might have a bad IAC or TPS. The coolant temp sensor might need to be cleaned, or you may have a vacuum leak. All of those will make the idle surge like that.

Some guy I know wrote up a how-to on adjusting the TPS. Perhaps it will be useful.

I think my TPS is bad.. or something is bad. When the car warms up everytign fucks up. My idle is set high.. around 650. When the car warms up it drops to 500. I Set the idle when the car was warm.. and did hte TPS.. and it was fine. This mornign it started fucking up again.. and when the car warmed up the idol dropped to around 500. Maybe I need to set the TPS again and the idle.. and than unplug the battery and reset the ECU. OR maybe I have bad sensors?

Well when you fuck around with the TPS and idle.... and it starts working.... it pretty much says.. it's the TPS and I don't need to flash the codes.

No it doesn't. Cars are not that simple anymore, hence why not everyone works on them. It could be something related to it. It could be you are bumping a wire to something else. It could be you are creating an air leak somewhere. It could be a lot of things, check the codes, don't be an idiot and waste time and money on chasing symptoms.

When you bump the TPS the ECM thinks you have given it a little more throttle so you get a bit more fuel and the idle goes up. After a while, the computer re-learns the idle reading from the TPS and adjusts itself to make the idle where it belongs. If you have a consistantly low idle, there is something causing it. Check the codes, check the TPS. These are both free tests that may tell you something useful.
