    302 Windsor + AOD (1986) - lugging under light load

    Has anyone seen this before? If so where should I start looking.

    CAR
    1986 Lincoln Town Car, 302 Windsor. EFI, AOD

    SYMPTOMS
    The car feels like it missing under light load

    Idle = smooth as silk
    Accelerate = Smooth.
    65 mph = smooth

    35~40 mph: Drive along flat road at a steady 35~40 mph - and accelerate a little (eg up a rise) and she misses a little.

    Have replaced these (with new) so far
    - coil
    - plug leads
    - plugs

    Distributor rotor etc looks fine.

    My suggestion, would be to drive in "D" and not "OD" up to about 50-55 mph...

    It sounds like it is lugging in OD...

        More than likely its the plug wires, at least thats my experience in the past.

        you should also check the ECM for stored trouble codes and check for vacuum leaks.

          I had a similar issue when my throttle position sensor was not calibrated properly. With the engine off and the key on, the (green wire I believe) should measure as close as possible to 1.0 Volt. Mine was set to something like .80 Volts and it would cause a bucking or shudder at the speed you mention.

          I drove the car in "D" only, not "OD" unless I was on the highway. So as mentioned in a previous post, see if the problem goes away by driving the car in "D" only.

          You will not hurt anything by using keeping it out of "OD".

                That doesn't really fix the problem though .

                  old injectors will do that, and will be smooth in all other ranges of rpm/power and speed.

                      Bad TPS sensor can also cause that, as can a clogged fuel filter. I'd check the TPS setting and change out the filter to see if that helps. My second guess would be plug wires, but if you've changed them and it didn't help, I guess thats not it.
