Having more than needed does not make it cool more. The right amount is what makes it cool the best.

AutoZone doesn't sell R12, what your car uses if it hasn't been converted to R134a.

If your system is putting out air anywhere 50 degrees or below, it's cooling well and I wouldn't mess with it.

Actually it works better with less in it, but then it completely freezes up and stops working.

So if I bleed some off it might work better?

When was the system recharged/converted to R134? Chances are it needs a recharge, which is typical of an older car because its going to have some leaks somewhere. I wouldn't worry about the system leaking too much, most do by this time and chasing down leaks will get costly. Just check the temperature of the air coming out of the vents and plan to add a charge of refridgerant every year to two years, depending on the AC system's condition.

Since r12 refridgerant has a much higher oil content in it than r134, the seals for the AC system will hold up alot better and leak less. This is why with r12, you can get as much as a few years with one recharge, depending on the system's condition. I got 4 years of 37 F cold air out of my blazer with a recharge with R12, the 20 year old compressor failed by the 4th year. It was a nice thing since my s10 blazer had a black paintjob and tan vinyl seats. R12 is expensive though, I only had it put in then since I had three cans of it that I bought at a garage sale for $3. For anyone trying to use r12, don't put it in yourself. Its highly toxic and flammable, way more than r134, so you would be better off taking to a professional to do it.
