    Ate another one

Well this makes 2 water pumps in 25k on my car. I've now officially needed to replace the water pump more often than the spark plugs. I've had a slow leak for a while now, and I've been smelling antifreeze once in a while but hadn't located the problem. Today the car overheated on me, and when I coasted into Wawa to get some water, it seemed like the steam was from a blown hose on the water pump. Apparently not. The gasket at the back of the water pump between the pump body and the plate on the back of the pump blew out. This just annoys me because its the second time a pump has failed on me, and this one is less than a year old. I'm not sure if I have a warranty on it, but if I do, I'll see about getting a new one. If they won't do that, perhaps they can get me a new gasket for the back plate on the pump so I can just replace that. Oh well, time to go tear the car apart after dark. wheee

I ripped the backplate off the water pump currently on the wagon (accident). I put some RTV, let it set for fifteen minutes, then put everything back together. It held like a dream for the two weeks I was driving it.

water pump is off. I can see the gasket pushed outward on the bottom edge of the pump body. The bypass hose was also screwed up internally. It looks like a piece of the inner hose folded over and got between the hose and the fitting. This was probably the initial small leak, and likely it blew out the gasket on the water pump when it overheated. The temp guage spiked and pegged before I could get the engine shut down. I'm guessing the pump blew up then. So tomorrow I go and see if I can warranty the water pump without the reciept, and if not I'll try and buy the gasket for the pump body to backing plate. All else failing, another new water pump goes on the car. And a new bypass hose.

Time wasn't too bad. I'm posting this what, an hour and 20 minutes later, and that included getting lights set up outside, cleanup, a shower, and a look through the file folder of car stuff for the reciept. It still mildly irritates me how much garbage is attached to the water pump, but oh well.

dang that sucks, my initial 1/2 HO conversion pump wasnt tight on one side so it blew the timing cover and the block coolant passage.
