New Engine for my 85 CV

If you haven't read my other thread, my car caught on fire about a week ago and I have been cleaning it up. Since everything but the motor is out of the car I will hopefully be putting an HO compatible engine in it.

I have a spare 302 laying around that is an '88 crate engine that was special ordered by my grandpa in 1988 that he had in his Cougar. I only know a little about the motor, I know it's a 302 and that it is an '88, but it has a carb on it. The carb is a stock Ford carb with plenty of vac lines. The motor only has about 30K miles on it, but it has sat in my garage for plenty of years. I will be rebuilding it because of its long time of inactivity.

I plan on first getting my 85 302 running in my car, then pulling it and putting this 88 302 in with some explorer stuff on it.

    A few questions I have:

    - An 88 302 should be a roller block correct? Regardless of being a crate engine with a carb?

-I plan to run GT40P heads, which cam works best with these heads?

-I have read that some Exlporers/Mountaineers have GT40 heads and some have GT40P heads, is there any way to know which have the GT40P's?

-Also, will mustang shorties work with GT40P's, or will I need to run Lincoln logs?

I haven't pulled the intake from the 88 yet but that should tell me if its a roller correct?

    Thanks!

    -'88 is a roller block
-The cam selection IMHO is based on what you want from your engine.
-GT40Ps say GT40P on the head its self. You can also identify them by the spark plug angle. They stick out straighter than a normal head.
-If you want to keep your stock exhaust, lincoln logs will have to do. You can go with the proper FRPP headers or the BBKs if your running headers already.

Thanks, I think I have read somewhere that you can use mustang shorties with gt40p's if you use spark plug heat socks any truth to this?

Currently I'm using ford shorties but I have a pair of lincoln logs laying around so using them wouldn't be hard but I'd rather use the shorties.

Also with the gt40p heads and explorer top end, what vehicles can I harvest 24 lb injectors from?

You shouldn't need 24# injectors for what your doing. Especially if you run a regular HO or Explorer cam. If you do end up needing them, DOHC jelly bean Taurus's have them, you'll need to splice in the new style connector too so grab the harnesses.

Don't waste your time with the lincoln logs. FRPP headers (the Ford Racing ones) clear the plugs just fine.
