Hello all, i'm a new CrownVic Owner and just joined here, what a great site. I have a 1985 CV with a 351 W. I am looking to add a four barrel carb to it . I have the intake already, and am wondering what size to get . I"m thinking mild street, update the cam nothing too big . I've had eddy carbs before and find them to be junk. Thanks !

650 cfm is plenty for stock heads... 600 may also be enough. Get a spreadbore for better gas mileage and a square bore for more noise and maybe throttle response.

A 650 would give you plenty of wiggle room should you decide to upgrade your heads & cam later down the road. If not, then a 600 should fit the bill just fine. I'd choose a Holley with vacuum secondaries, a 4150 if you want to mess around with jetting and power valve options for the secondaries or a 4160 if you're not that brave. Common myth is you want those secondaries to slam open with the primaries but that is just myth. 650 is overkill for sure, 600 is borderline too much for a stock 351w
yrs ago a guy i knew was running a 390 cfm holley carb on his 91 cvpi.......plenty of power and 25 mpg highway

A 390 is actually what Ford was using on the 351 in truck applications in the mid 80s. It can't make effective use of more on a stock motor.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I had a 600cfm on my C10 with the 350/290 crate and it ran very well. You don't need more than that until you're at 300 or more hp. Add lower gears to it and that'll give it the grunt you're after.88 Town Car (wrecked, for sale)

Holley makes a 390 cfm 4160 I believe. If youre going to do more stuff down the road, do a 600, and get some smaller jets. Thanks for the replies guys. I do want to put in a bigger cam down the road, I was thinking a 600 cfm would do fine with some new gears. I have the aluminum intake already (came with the car ) Are the heads alright or should I be looking for bigger valved heads? Not sure if I want to go all out and get the aluminum RPM eddy heads just yet. Maybe also some new headers as well this summer . I built an old Plymouth and sold it, so all this Ford stuff is kind of new to me and the combos people use so any info is greatly appreciated.

Okay I think I may try Summit's 600 cfm carb it's seem to of gotten pretty good reviews.. as for the job ... i currently have factory 2 barrel carb and intake. I have a 4 brl aluninum intake. Are these upgrades a paom when it comes to the linkages ? Will i have to buy adapters of some sort to do this? I'd like to make this my first attempt at installing it myself..i normally get my mechanic to do this . Help is appreciated guys, thanks

One thing to consider, replacing the cam requires removal of the intake. The 85 probably has that crappy plastic timing gear, which really ought to be replaced if you haven't done it yet. Getting the cam out requires removing the timing chain. Honestly, you're already halfway there at this point. The kink with this, the heads on it also suck. A cam will only get you so much without swapping those boat anchors for something that will move some air.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
