Magnaflow XL 3 Mufflers: Has anyone used these mufflers on here, I want something a bit more tame compared to the "XLerator turbo" mufflers I have now. I don't want highway drone, but i'd like some noise at idle and when accelerating. Thanks!

According to his sig, 91grandmarquis has them on his car, but not sure how they'd sound on yours if you have bigger pipe or highflow cats or whatever.
Are yours the AP Exhaust Big Max Turbo mufflers? I think those are pretty much like any other generic turbo muffler like Thrush, Flowtech or Cherry Bomb. The Dynomax Super Turbo is pretty tame, the flow directors smooth the flow and the sound, the exhaust doesn't hit the muffler ends and bounce off making the drone. A set of those, even with 2.5" duals and no cats would be mellow.
You could give Thrush Welded mufflers a try. We used them on a couple trucks at my old job, they didn't drone on the highway like Flowmaster Original 40's do, but they did drone some at lower speed city driving, so if that's an issue you should probably forget them.88 Town Car (wrecked, for sale)

I have Magnaflow on my cars... they're the glasspack "straight-through" types... the 88 is very mellow even with the high flow cats because lopo and the 93 lets everyone know about it, but it's still mellow at cruise.

I suppose I should post my findings. Car sounds a lot meaner, just as loud at idle (70db in the cabin). Didn't quiet it down anywhere near as much as I wanted, still very loud. A little less drone at certain Rpms. About 77db at 70mph. I will probably just use some sound deadening inside the vehicle. I used ear plugs on a 7 hour drive with it so I didn't go crazy-Phil

I used to use ear-muffs driving at work, at my old job. One reason was because certain trucks had a loud beeper to alert you of speeding (we were restricted to 70mph) and some beepers were very loud and would go off a bit below 70, so I'd put the ear-muffs on and cruise with the beeper going off. The ones I have are the 3M brand I think, red ones you can get at Home Depot or Lowes or what have you, supposed to cut sound about 30db so not bad, make a big difference. The other times would be driving one of the old diesel trucks. It was a beaten truck, lots of rattles and squeaks and we thought the dog house wasn't all the way sealed so some engine noise got in, and Duramax diesels aren't quiet when you're sitting next to them, so I'd wear them driving that old POS truck. Both of those situations were louder than our trucks with Thrush Welded mufflers on them. The truck at my current job, an '01 International 4300 has a huge hole in the bottom of the downpipe so the exhaust shoots straight down to the ground, and it's still not as loud as either of those situations were.
I don't have sensitive ears but if I have to listen to noise like that for ours, or drive without sunglasses, I get a headache/migraine easily, or make one much worse than it is.Last edited by 88Vic; 08-19-2015, 06:27 PM.88 Town Car (wrecked, for sale)

I really suspect that a lot of drone issues are pipe related, not so much the mufflers. Using different length mufflers can actually help with that. Lincoln used that, and different sized tailpipes on the Mark VII to make them not stupid. They are actually the only cars with a Fox H pipe I've ever seen that had absolutely no exhaust drone problems. Of course mine has two matching mufflers and tails now, and it drones. Those are just your basic quiet turbo mufflers too. The Townie drones like a fucker at 50 in overdrive, also same-size mufflers, tails, and a Fox H pipe. On my list of things to do are obtain some of those weight things that mount at the mid-pipe connections to see if that stops it. If not, maybe swapping one of the mufflers for the longer version will shut it up.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Some quick research has suggested that possibly creating a "T" with a welded-shut stub of pipe off the tailpipe may be the magic fix. Apparently you want the stub to be about half the total length of the tail, or I suppose you just make it as close to that as will fit. Apparently this is supposed to cancel the drone by feeding back what amounts to an inverted wave. Theory is sound. Might be worth trying, my tailpipe setup is the Impy SS pipe, a simple 12" straight extension and a down-turn. Doesn't seem that the stub pipe needs to be perpendicular to the tail, so its possible I could have more of a Y shaped thing and run the stub parallel to the actual exhaust pipe. Maybe the other option is to get hold of the stock resonators used on an Impala and stick them where my current extension pipe lives.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

You're talking about a Helmholtz resonator, the 09+ F150 muffler has those to eliminate drone. Here's what it looks like:
Also you use Thrush Turbo mufflers right? Those tend to drone, any standard turbo muffler does a lot of the time. I have one on my minivan after the stock muffler split at the seam, and a friend of mine put one on his 4.3 Blazer, and the both have a bit of drone, not much but with the rest of the stock exhaust, it's nearly stock volume overall anyways. The Dynomax Super Turbo doesn't drone like they do, smoother flow gets rid of the drone. There's a guy around here who runs them on his Fox, BBK headers, o/r H-pipe, Super Turbos and 2.5" tailpipes and he says it doesn't have much drone at all, barely any and it's not loud either.88 Town Car (wrecked, for sale)

Interesting, so you would just make those tees somewhere on the tail pipe?? The more I hear about the dynomax the more I regret getting the magnaflows, but what's done is done

seems you can tie them in anywhere they fit.

as an example.
Need to calculate out the length based on where yours is obnoxious but thats nothing a tach and some quick math can't do for you.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

My brother was telling me about this, it's a big deal in the mustang community, and rightly so. My '98 would've really benefitted from this mod. It had a low-end under-load drone that would drive you nuts! I just always tried to keep it revving so I didn't hear it. The '90 doesn't really have that problem. I had 4 cats and little tiny glasspacks on the '98. I'm running Moroso spiral flows on the '98 with an off-road h-pipe. Had an x-pipe on the '98 too, not sure if that matters.

1500 rpm is annoying in my car. Thats like 45-50 in overdrive. Most of the roads around here are that speed limit too, so it can get irritating. The Mark VII tends to carry on closer to 60, which gets irritating on the highway.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
